It is a calm place to reflect and unwind as you take in the breathtaking views, while still being very close to the city, shops and schools. Off the grid: take a break from load-shedding and water-shedding. The cottage is situated 5km (7 minutes’ drive) from the centre of Makhanda (Grahamstown). The space Featherstone View cottage offers a modern open plan kitchen – lounge layout in the living space, with a 10-seater yellowwood table & benches. The minimal and comfortable interior space opens up via 3m sliding doors onto a wooden deck. The main bedroom (Queen size bed) and full bathroom are on the ground floor. A second bedroom is situated up a flight of steps. The cottage offers: A wooden deck on two sides, to enjoy the spectacular view on still days Oversized windows and doors to enjoy the view from inside – when windy. A wood-burning Charnwood closed combustion fireplace Rainwater tanks (60,000L) High capacity (8kWp) solar system that runs the whole house and all appliances. There is a grid tie to Eskom in case of need. Crisp, white, percale linen Fresh herbs in the garden Microwave, electric kettle and toaster Firepit with braai accessories There is another self-catering establishment immediately next door if you need extra beds. Fast internet Smart TV with Netflix Hikes: A 5 minute walk from the cottage, along the road, takes you on to Mountain Drive from where you can access 50km + of walking, running and bike trails. Alternatively, stay inside and laze around the fireplace or on the deck, enjoy the view and the sunsets, mountains and clouds. Guest access The cottage is self-contained and you will have private access to the cottage property. You will share an automatic gate with the main house, but the house and gate are ±200m away and out of sight. The cottage is located in a field. High clearance is not required, but the driveway is bumpy and it can be very muddy if it rains extremely hard. Other things to note For liability reasons, we do not accept third party bookings – the guest that books must be over 18 and must arrive on site, with the number of guests matching the booking. The cost of your stay is based on the number of people, so please make sure the number of guests is valid for your stay. The cottage is situated at the top of a mountain. Lovely views come with lots of wind, especially in winter. Be prepared! Please close windows when you go out in case the wind picks up, and please be cautious about lighting braai fires when windy. Please ensure that you never leave an outdoor fire unattended, and that all fires are extinguished at night / before you leave the property. TIP: when windy, only open one door or window at a time. The second, upstairs bedroom, is a loft space bound by a half-wall, and there is no door to that space. Since there is only one bathroom, the space is best suited to one large family, or two small families that don’t mind sharing. Although maximum occupancy of the cottage is four people, there are beds to suit four people and two thick single mattresses that can be used for extra kids (please enquire about this option). In the main bedroom, we regret that the corner cupboard is not for guest use. The second, upstairs bed, can be made up as one king-size bed, or as two singles. Please specify this when making your booking. Please be cautious when allowing children upstairs and supervise them at all times. There is a lockable baby/child gate at the bottom of the stairs that will be effective up to about age three or four, depending on the child. The cottage has a very private feeling, but it is surrounded by neighbours on all sides. On the same property, the main house is ±200m away and out of sight. The three other neighbours are visible but not intrusively so – please check the photographs. At the back of the property, there is a black-wattle stand that we are tackling actively. Free, ample parking and spacious garden. Cleaning service available on request. Linen and bath towels are provided. The WIFI must be on at all times as the main house (5A) sources WIFI from here by line of sight. In the cottage, the WIFI is required to operate the geyser. If an appliance trips the power, your host will contact you for access to re-set. The cottage is linked to a security response service and the cottage has exterior security beams. Please take note that parties are not allowed on the premises & we do not permit non-staying visitors to the property unless agreed in advance. We regret no pets and no smoking. Please do not leave chargers (for example laptops / phones / lights) plugged in - they may start fires. We also do not allow high heel or sharp shoes on the property (house or deck) as they cause damage to the floors and wood. Children under two may stay free of charge. Checkers 6060 and various local restaurants will deliver. If the Eskom (mains power) grid goes down, we will ask you not to use appliances until either the grid is restored, or until the sun comes out, in order to save your battery life. We hope you understand!
