You will be delighted to entertain your inner gourmet chef in this kitchen after shopping some of CT’a finest local farm stands and local markets. Then retreat to the library for a film or good read by the fire. Or continue the fun with one of our many board games. Fall is for apple picking, local wineries, hay rides, “haunted” corn mazes, Halloween on Main Street, escape rooms, local farms, antique stores and markets, Candlewood lake, fishing, kayaking, hiking, biking. And Sunmer offers all that plus some of the states finest nursery gardens like Hollandia and Shakespeare’s Garden, and just bathing in the soothing energies and sounds of nature poolside. Adjoining the main house you’ll find Japanese fern garden, gardens of both sunny and shaded, flowering and green style plus several different seating areas for contemplation, working/studying outdoors or socializing. Gardens include 14-18ft boxwoods, giant English Holly trees, extraordinarily old grape arbor, fragrant pine, Japanese weeping cherries, varieties of magnolias, dogwoods and an abundance of fragrant bushes and flowers like mock orange, climbing roses, bee balm, echinaceas, asters, peonies, lilacs, lavenders and so much more! A whimsical, English garden lovers delight! Besides enjoying the country fresh air, visitors have modern comfort with central air-conditioning on the main floor and individual air conditioning seasonally for the bedrooms for personal control. Gourmet chefs kitchen is fully stocked with wares for cooking, baking and seasonal tabletops. Appliances include 2 Viking stoves with 6 burner and grill range, Viking beverage center and Miele Dishwasher. This property offers seasonal family fun for foragers with several fruit bearing trees and bushes mingling with nature throughout the property: raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, red currants, boysenberries, gooseberries, blueberries, bing cherries, apple, pear, peach, Concord grape, champagne grapes and other edibles. Make fresh tea from the garden with peppermint, pineapple mint, echinacea, rose hips, dandelions. It’s all there for those who know how. Apart from the main house, there are other structures on the property. A historic barn from 1702 and a reproduction two story garage (with occupied caretaker living quarters) to add to the charm of the property. They are not accessible to guests, however. Please note that the gardens and pool are seasonally dependent and generally open from April thru Labor Day. Photos are representative of these amenities but they may not be exact, depending on the time of year. The refreshing gunite lagoon pool (POOL IS NOT HEATED) is overlooked by a platform pergola shaded by two wisterias, the perfect spot to enjoy outdoor dining, lounging and swing with a view of the historic main house, historic barn, mature flowering gardens. Landscape lights make night swims under the stars all the more memorable. Guest access Main house and driveway. When open/available, the gardens adjoining the main house, custom gunite pool, and pool area. Other things to note Pet Policy: We are lovers of well trained pets. Some pets, however, are not allowed. This includes exotic animals, certain dog breeds typically considered agressive and any pet with a bite history. Guests shall never permit a pet to be off a leash outside the house. Please be advised that you will be responsible for additional cleaning fees and damage or replacement costs resultant from pet misbehavior or accidents. Supplemental pet fee is $75 per stay/booking. Kitchen Etiquette: Whatever you use, return it in the same condition of cleanliness as you found it to the same drawer or shelf you found it. To avoid splattering grease, always always use lids when cooking on the stovetop and either lids or the metal foil provided to cover food cooking in the ovens. If you chose not to, then you are responsible for throughly cleaning the kitchen prior to checkout. All garbage and recycling must be taken to the garbage bins and disposed of in a sanitary manner, never stored in the basement or vicinity of the house. Supplemental $130 cleaning fee will be due if the kitchen is not returned clean on checkout. Seasonal Pool: Host offers the chlorinated pool amenity as a bonus to guests when available. Bedroom Alternatives: The 2nd floor king-bed bedroom is oversized and capable of comfortably fitting a crib, playpen or inflatable mattress (not supplied by host must bring your own). His and hers master bedroom closets with custom dressers provide abundant storage. The 2nd floor full-bed bedroom includes two yoga mats and weights for morning routines with a garden view. The 2nd floor twin-bed bedroom has a built in study desk, record player with vintage discs, a historic nursery mural and abundant cabinetry for storage. The other 2nd floor garden twin-bed bedroom has a walk in closet and is also large enough to fit a full sized inflatable mattress or crib (not supplied must bring your own). The red queen bedroom is located on the first floor with bathroom access and is ideal for senior relatives or anyone who needs easy access to the bathroom in the middle of the night. This room has a small closet, rocking chair and antique dresser with TV monitor. This antique home has one full bathroom on the main floor. The bathroom is a recent renovation with materials in keeping with the historic theme of the home, like: slate tiles, white oak wood floors, mahogany countertop, beaten copper sink and brass fixtures. The glass and slate sit-in shower stall includes rain shower and handheld shower heads. For water conservation reasons and the fact this is a historic home dependent on its own well water. The bathroom is accessible to all from the bar area of the living room. The living-room walls and ceilings are chestnut with hand-hewn ceiling beams.
