Riverfront property in theNew River Gorge National Park and Preserve, 2 miles from Sandstone Falls. The perfect spot to stay while you are hitting the slopes at Winterplace - a 24 miles/45 min drive via the scenic New River Parkway and Rt.3, Weathered Ground Brewery is a popular stop en route. Ideal for groups and families: 5BR/2BA well-equipped kitchen, huge porch, Starlink WiFi, Smart TV, heat pump, A/C, pet-friendly. Large private river lot with firepit, fishing, boating, and stargazing. The space Four Winds Sandstone Falls is a remote, riverfront property in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The house is spacious and private, with a huge front porch offering exceptional river and mountain views. Four Seasons of Fun: Our location makes the house a great basecamp for four seasons of fun in the New River valley. Guests love the variety of wildflowers that blossom in the spring months and many find this the perfect time of year for hiking and early season raft trips. The Island Loop and Big Branch trails each start 2 miles from the house, and there are many hiking options in the area. Summer offers endless opportunities for outdoor recreation and is best known as rafting season in southern WV. Book a family friendly float trip or rent tubes, kayaks, or a raft from Cantrell Rafting- Hinton Basecamp or Waterdawg Outdoors, both provide shuttle service. Spend a day making the hour drive to the northern end of the park to raft the New River Gorge, see the New River Gorge Bridge, and visit the local shops and restaurants of Fayetteville. Summer is also the perfect time to enjoy the private riverfront lot at the house as you fish, float, swim, or relax by the campfire. Our winter guests often visit to stay riverfront during their trip to Winterplace Ski Resort. Weathered Ground Brewery is a popular choice for dinner after a day on the slopes. Bird-watchers will enjoy seeing the many species of ducks and other birds that visit the river valley during the cold weather months. Birdwatching from the porch is fantastic year-round: you will likely see heron and bald eagles, and may spot cormorant, osprey, and many other bird species. Fall is an ideal time for hiking and late season boating while viewing the incredible colors of our fall foliage. The Hinton Railroad Festival is a 15 m drive, and a day trip to the Fayetteville end of the park for the Bridge Day Festival and to Gauley River rafting outfitters is an hour drive. Fall is also an optimal time for fishing the New River Valley. Inside the House: The house has three entrances- the covered front door has eight steps and leads into the foyer, the uncovered side door has three steps to a small landing entering the living room, and the covered back door has two steps directly into the laundry room. There a five total bedrooms. The king bedroom is upstairs and accessed via a spiral staircase. There is also an upstairs living space with fold-out futon and bathroom with shower. There are four smaller bedrooms downstairs, with three down a shared hallway and a more private queen bedroom accessed through the kitchen utility room. The upstairs suite has a king bed and the futon in the on-suite that folds out to a comfortable twin size bed. There is also a small tv and coffee table in the on-suite. Three of the downstairs bedrooms are located together in a hallway off the foyer- the purple room with a twin over full bunk, the blue room with full over full bunks, and the pink room with twin bed. The downstairs orange bedroom has a queen bed. All beds have bedding including sheets, comforters, pillows, and extra blankets. The living room has a large leather sectional and television with Direct TV and a DVD player. You'll also find a magnetic dart board and numerous board games and books for your entertainment. The kitchen has all the necessities- a stove, fridge, microwave, coffee pot and Keurig, crock-pot, toaster, basic cookware and dishes. We keep the basics stocked- coffee, tea, sugar, olive oil, salt/pepper, and condiments in the fridge. There is a high-capacity washer and dryer in the laundry room. In addition to the sleeping spaces inside the home, there is ample space for camping by the river or in the yard right beside the house. There is a basketball goal in the front yard and plenty of space to play, and there are horseshoes on the porch. The New River Parkway runs between the house and private riverfront lot, it is typically very low traffic on weekdays and busier on weekend as more visitors travel to the falls. The river front lot is very large and private. The ramp down to the lot is shared with the cabin next door, which has it's own separate lot just upstream of the house's. There is an established fire pit and picnic table on the river lot. Bring your camp chair or outdoor blankets! NOTE: When the river is high or at flood stage, the river lot may be partially or completely under water. Guests enjoy fishing from the bank and by wading out at low to normal water. There is no boat ramp on property, but there are multiple public boat accesses within a couple of miles of the house. Launching a tube or kayak from the bank (at appropriate river levels) is no problem, but its not suitable for launching a john boat. At typical summer low the river is a very slow moving pool, great for swimming and floating. Lifejackets are necessary as the New is very wide and powerful. Most of the bank is naturalized besides the stone steps into the river. Cellular service is poor on the property but is strong at both Sandstone Falls and Brooks Falls, two miles in each direction. WiFi is provided. The Direct TV and WiFi are both via satellite and may temporarily lose function during storms. Don't worry, you're here to get away from it all! The DVD player with a collection of DVD's and board games are fun regardless of the weather, and there's no better place to watch it rain than from the porch. Climate control is not a problem with the heat and A/C system. There are also backup gas heaters that work without electricity in case the power goes out in the winter. There is a lights out kit available with candles, a flashlight, and weather radio. The house was build as our home, not as a rental, and reflects our personal style and interests. It's uniqueness is part of the charm, and it is unique! Be prepared for bright colors and local art. If you are looking for a resort style get away, this isn't what you're looking for. The house is large, clean, and comfy but it is not fancy or without quirks. If you want a private spot by the river with space for your whole crew I think you'll love it here. It's our favorite place in the whole world. Send me a message if you have any questions about the house, property, or area. We look forward to hosting you! Guest access Guests have full access to all areas within the house and private use of the yard and riverfront lot. A storage building on the mountain behind the house will be locked and off limits. The cabin next door shares access to this building and to the ramp to the river. The steps behind the house (off the master bedroom) are off limits. These steps are only for use as a fire escape. Other things to note There are two people you may encounter during your stay. A delivery man from Sweet Springs water brings full 5-galleon jugs. If you prefer he wait till after your stay that's fine, just let me know. Robbie mows the grass and comes on no set schedule, he may be there during your stay but won't disturb you. There are few full-time neighbors nearby. From the house, no houses are visible down river as the property immediately next door is owned by the National Park Service and is naturalized. Upriver, you will see a brown cabin, white house, and a few campers. These are all seasonal and friendly. There is also a 'road less traveled' option for reaching the property: I-64 to the Pluto-Bragg exit then following Irish Mountain Road to the river. This is an extremely remote, gravel/dirt road that is impassible in snowy conditions.
