A mile outside of town right on Highway 2 you can try the new Mt. Index Brewery and Distillery. Index came to exist from the timber and granite harvested from the area. Those commodities were shipped to Seattle by train and those tracks remain active today - providing a daily reminder of the formation of the town. The route stretches all the way to Chicago and is called the Emipre Builder route by Amtrak. For light sleepers, we provide a new set of earplugs on the nightstand. Our new double pane windows have mitigated the noise considerably. Most people find the train romantic and nostalgic - and a tiny percentage find it annoying (actually, we've had zero complaints since upgrading our windows in 2021). If you hate trains, the Skykomish Valley might not be the ideal vacation spot for you as it's hard to get away from.
