Our home witnessed the battle of Gettysburg and was part of the home of Henry and Catherine Garlach. We feel very privileged to own and be able to share with you part of local Civil War era history! Here you will experience the comfort of your own home with a fully equipped kitchen, 3 bedrooms, full bath, half bath (on the first floor), office, living & dining room along with a laundry/mud room. We do have a sofa bed if needed. Catherine Garlach provided food and water to the Union General, Alexander Schimmelfennig. General Schimmelfenning’s horse was shot out from under him in the alley behind our home and he managed to hide in the backyard of the Garlach home in their woodshed while the surrounding streets were occupied by Confederates. That night, while Catherine fed her hogs, General Schimmelfennig let her know that he was there, and she provided him with food and water while he was in hiding until he rejoined his men on July 4th, 1863. Being the cabinet maker's wife that she was, she built a make-shift floor in her flooded cellar using logs and boards which allowed for her family and some of her neighbors to stay safe during the battle. Our home has a dedicated parking space in the rear for a large truck/SUV and free parking just a short distance away. Downtown Gettysburg You can walk from the house to get anywhere in the downtown area, as the house is in the heart of Gettysburg. Gettysburg National Cemetery and Evergreen Cemetery are within walking distance and some of the battlefields are as well. The is one parking spot located right behind the house and a free parking lot within a 1-2 minute walk. This home has steeper steps (no children’s gate either) that must be used to access all bedrooms and full bath. If you have trouble with steps or have younger children, this home may not be suitable.
