Big Bend Homestead - Solitude Close to BBNP

Tucked into the Chihuahuan desert, Big Bend Homestead sits on over 50 private acres only a 6 mile drive from the entrance to BBNP. The homestead has been mindfully crafted for adventurous spirits seeking comfort, solitude and inspiration during their stay in the desert. The space The homestead is the perfect place to unwind after a day of adventuring. When arriving you will enter into a large screened in porch with comfortable seating and a large dining area. From there you will find a fully equipped kitchen and living area. The space is full of treasured antiques and eclectic furnishings. The custom made sofa doubles as a secondary sleeping area. Upon request, twin sheets and extra linens are available for the sofa bed. The bedroom has a queen sized medium-firm mattress. The bed is situated facing a picture window that looks east to Wild Horse Mountain. Enjoy the sunrise view each morning. High ceilings, abundant natural light and mountain views make the small space feel large. The bedroom has a writer's desk for those needing to get a little work done or to let the creative juices flow. The bath house is a few steps away from the bedroom. Enjoy a warm shower with an epic view. We provide robes but you may want to bring slippers or sandals. The front porch is screened in and has a large dining table that fits four and two outdoor lounge chairs that are perfect for morning coffee. The outdoor space features a fire pit, outdoor chairs, a hammock, and a propane grill. A short walk to a private mesa gives you 360 views of Wild Horse Mountain, Willow Mountain and Bee Mountain. We also have a private hiking loop. The homestead is the only residence on the property with no neighbors on either side. Enjoy your solitude. Guest access Guests will have full access of the home and bath house. Before arrival, you will be provided with a custom entry code for the front door. We have a hiking loop that takes you onto the mesa and back down. You are free roam the property on foot though we do ask that you do not drive off road (ATV/dirt bikes included), remove rocks/artifacts/any other objects you may find. The Chihuahuan desert is a fragile ecosystem and we’d like to preserve and enjoy the little piece we have. While driving please stay on the dirt driveway. Other things to note Roads & Access We highly recommend a high clearance/4WD vehicle for the area. Many of the local roads are unpaved and can be rough. During our rainy season (May-September) a 4WD vehicle may be required to access the property. To enter our property you will drive on a private, single lane, windy dirt road for about a quarter mile. The road dips into and out of a dry creek. It is passable by any vehicle but if you are unfamiliar with west texas dirt roads it may feel extra adventurous. No RV's, trailers, or pull behinds. If you feel uncomfortable with this we highly recommend arriving before dark and reaching out with any questions. Additionally, please check the weather forecast before your arrival day and inform us if there is a chance of rain. We generally do not take bookings during monsoon season but there can be occasional rain other months of the year. In May and June it is likely that you will need 4wd to access the property. While a significant amount of rain is needed for the property to become inaccessible, it is possible after a rainstorm. If you see rain in the forecast let us know and we can discuss options. Water Conservation Our home operates off of rain catchment. We get about 10 to 13 inches of rain annually (compared to 35+ in Central Texas). During monsoon season our gutter system fills our water tanks. Because of the lack of rain most of the year, we must be very conservative with our water use. When staying at the homestead, we ask that you practice water conservation. Turn off the tap while washing your hands, scrubbing dishes, or brushing your teeth. Take a quick shower, or better yet, shower with a friend. Don’t overflush the toilet. If you are comfortable with it, feel free to pee outside. Wildlife When visiting the homestead, you are truly in nature. Coyotes, tarantulas, lizards, snakes, rodents, deer, and even bears are a possibility. Any sort of dangerous encounter is incredibly unlikely but we do want you to be aware of the possibility that wildlife will cross your path. We have done our best to make the house a rodent free safe haven. When hiking the property it is best to keep an eye open for wildlife. Internet & Cell Service Cellular service is very spotty inside and around the house and in the Big Bend area. We have great internet provided by Starlink. Please be sure to note the wifi information and directions before heading out on your journey here as you may not have service while en route. Pets We allow well behaved dogs only. A pet fee does apply. Please note that there is no fenced area. Be aware that there is the possibility of coyotes, snakes, scorpions, bears, and other harmful creatures that can hurt your pet. It is your responsibility to keep them safe while staying on the property. Dogs are not allowed on furniture or beds. If you're planning to leave your pup while you venture we ask that you leave them in a crate. Any damage due to pets will need to be compensated for. And any unapproved pets will require an additional fee. Dogs are also not allowed in most areas of the national park. The state park is a great option when visiting Big Bend with pets. Please visit their websites for details on where you can take your pup. Please note: Brewster County charges a 7% hotel occupancy tax for all stays in the area. This will show up on your payment as “Community Fee”. This goes directly to Brewster County. Cleaning Fee: We pay our cleaning team more than fair wages for Brewster County. All of the cleaning fee and more goes directly to local staff.
