Beautiful Adobe Retreat in the Abiquiu Village
Description
An authentic adobe home in Abiquiu—the high-desert village that has quietly captivated artists and wanderers for generations. This isn’t a stripped-down rental. This is a home, lived in and loved, where guests can spread out among rooms with real books, comfortable surroundings, and a fully stocked kitchen. Strong wifi. A local caretaker who knows everyone. And light that does things it doesn’t do elsewhere—ask O’Keeffe, who couldn’t stay away. The space For fifty years, this adobe has been our family’s refuge in the Chama Valley—a place where native New Mexicans and those in the know have quietly gathered for generations. Fully remodeled from roof to foundation, the house delivers the comforts you actually want: a well-equipped kitchen with everything you need to cook a real meal, a bathroom worth mentioning, and rooms filled with both contemporary pieces and genuine antiques. The baskets hold books people have actually read. The drawers contain more than three forks. The furniture has been chosen for living, not staging. It’s eclectic without being fussy, comfortable without feeling generic—because this is where we come home. From here, you’re minutes from Georgia O’Keeffe’s home and Ghost Ranch, an easy drive to Santa Fe’s galleries or Taos’s slopes. Hike the Chama River Canyon. Visit the Benedictine Monastery. Soak at Ojo Caliente. Or simply stay put under stars that stretch impossibly far. The house sits at the village’s highest point, reached by a dirt road with a bit of a climb (never an issue unless you drive a corvette, but worth mentioning). Inside, traditional adobe flow means rooms connect through each other—the primary bedroom accessed through the second bedroom, kitchen and bath off that same space. There’s an over-step entry and a raised tub requiring a few steps up—consider mobility needs carefully. You’ll share a rural neighborhood setting with neighbors who’ve lived here for decades. Expect daytime sounds of real life, and please practice flexibility and open communication around parking and occasional noise. These are good people simply living their lives. This isn’t an isolated rental—it’s authentic Abiquiu. If you want genuine over polished, welcome home. Guest access There is a sign on the house that says Casa De Artista. The lockbox is on the front door with keys to the house. The code is 4737 Exploring Abiquiú and the Chama Valley is easiest with a car, though strolling through the village is highly recommended. Parking is available next to the house on the right and behind the house by the water tower, offering convenient access for guests. Just be mindful that parking behind the house may require you to move at some point if the neighbor needs access to their space. Other things to note Parking Please park in the open area next to the house and make every effort not to block the road or access to the other homes in the area. We try to be very considerate of the neighbors and their lives, whenever possible. The area in front and back of the house is an easement to the adjacent properties, and there will occasionally be people coming and going, so please be understanding and flexible with our neighbors. Heat There are baseboard heaters in most of the rooms; you’ll want to turn these on to medium if it’s cold when you arrive to get the house warmed up. Once it’s reasonably warm, please turn them to low or medium; the house will stay warm once it’s heated up a bit. Wood Stoves There are two wood stoves, one in the kitchen and one in the bedroom. There's wood near the stoves for you to use and firestarter sticks in the pantry, off the kitchen, and matches in the kitchen to light it. PLEASE be careful if you decide to use these, as it can be tricky if you’re not comfortable with them. There is wood in the courtyard, off the bedroom, if you find yourself in need. Neighbors Please be considerate of the neighbors around the house as you venture around Abiquiu. Many families have lived there for generations and still have some challenges with outsiders. If you believe it may be private property or belong to someone else, please treat it as such and minimize any potential conflict. The housekeeper/manager is Brenda Martinez, and she will be able to assist you with most anything you may need. Her home number is (and her mobile number will be included when I send these documents separately. General Things To Know- The grill in the courtyard should have a propane tank accompanying it. Please feel free to use it at your leisure. You’re welcome to whatever food you find in the house. Frequently, guests will leave things so help yourself to anything you’d like. If something perishable has been left in the fridge, please use your best judgment on what should be done with it. In addition to the normal kitchen items, we have both a rice cooker, crock pot, and air fryer for your use. So you know before you arrive, we have a coffee grinder here and a standard coffee maker as well as a french press for you to use. There’s also a PUR water filter pitcher at the house and the water here is perfectly good to drink so don’t feel like you need to bring bottled water unless you’d like to do so. There’s a drying rack in the closet with the water heater if you find yourself needing it. If you’re curious about what’s happening in Abiquiu while you’re visiting, you can subscribe to the Abiquiu News. There is a general store here in Abiquiu called Bode’s at the bottom of the hill. They have quite an amazing assortment of gourmet items, including gluten-free offerings, if you find yourself in need of anything. The owner’s name is Dennis, he’s a tall man with very short hair and glasses. Please feel free to introduce yourself and chat with him or ask him any questions you may have. Upon Departure: Please wash the dishes and kitchen items and place them in the drying rack. The beds do not need to be made. Turn the baseboard heaters to low or off, depending on the weather Make sure all windows and doors are securely closed. Place the keys back in the lockbox. Have a safe journey!
