Loyalist cottage, cathedral ceiling, generator, air conditioning, use of dock
"Lost & Found" is a 100 yr old Loyalist cottage on beautiful Man O War Cay. The island is 2 1/2 miles long fronting the Atlantic ocean and the Sea of Abaco. The water is the clearest in the world and by rental boat you can explore magnificent beaches, quaint villages, and dive miles of magnificent reefs. MOW is the boat building capital of the Bahamas with a waterfront reminiscent of Maine. There are 400 friendly locals and some less number of foreign homeowners. The island is safe and clean. The space The open living room and kitchen have cathedral ceilings and tropical inspired furnishings. There are 2 full bedrooms and baths, both with showers. One bedroon has a queen and the other has twins. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need. There is good WIFI and TV with cable and sports channels. There is a whole house generator in case of occasional power outages. We have a dock you can use for your rental boat. The whole house is air conditioned and has a washer and a dryer. All linens and towels are provided. We have a Pawley's Island rope hammock under a beautiful coconut tree in the back yard and a porch with table and 4 chairs and a charcoal grill. You can rent a golf cart which is fun to explore the island but not necessary due to our cenral location right off the harbour. You will never tire of seeing the many shades of blue and green of the clearest water in the world. Rain provides our water, strored in a cistern below the house, off the roof. All the locals get around on golf carts. A little personal history. After selling our previous home on Elbow Cay, I decided despite advancing age, that I would buy this cottage which at the time was named "Low Overhead". It had recently been completely renovated down to the studs and figured it had been named to indicate that it would then be inexpensive to maintain. When we arrived to see it, we were surprised to find that the ceiling in the living room and kitchen was 6'2" high-- hence the name "Low Overhead". We bought it anyway and made extensive renovations, mainly removing the whole 2nd floor (where 13 children were raised) and putting in a tongue and groove ceiling and beams to stiffen the cottage. MOW Grocery on the upper street has a complete stock of groceries and sundries.and has baked snacks made by local ladies. Russell's little store sells some groceries and an ever changing selection of local baked and cooked foods as well as home baked Bahamas bread. Several local ladies sell dinners to go from their houses. Miss Ena sells various pies. Joe's Studio is a wonderful shop selling hats, T shirts, books of local interest, clothing, and household furnishings. A must see is the Sail Shop at the end of the sea road. Their canvas luggage, bags, and purses with the MOW logo are much coveted. You'll love meeting the friendly ladies as they sew. The MOW Marina is now being rebuilt after being destroyed by Hurricane Dorian. The 2 main docks are in and gas and diesel are being sold for boats and golf carts. Buildings will now constructed including a restaurant (recreating the very popular "Dock & Dine"). There is a coffee shop adjacent to the museum that is very popular with wonderful pastries and breakfast sandwiches. There is also the brand new "Snacky Shack" which serves ice cream, milk shakes, and sundaes. They have hamburgers, hot dogs, conch fritters, etc. FAVORITE THINGS TO DO: 1. Take your rental boat in the evening with wine and snacks and slowly cruise the harbour. 2. About a mile out of the village, on a lovely sand road past extensive estates, you come to the "Low Spot". The island here is only 50' wide with the Atlantic on one side and the Sea of Abaco on the other. It is a popular anchorage for cruising boats and the locals come here to swim off the beautiful beach. There is a large gazebo for you to get out of the sun. 3. A few miles north of MOW at the last Fowl Cay is a natural hot tub right off the beach. Years ago I talked for an hour with a guy there only to find out that he was Dale Earnheart. 4. Cruise the Sea of Abaco and experience (just a few highlights): Little Harbour- artist studio and Wreck Bar for lunch Sandy Cay for extensive snorkling inside the Sea of Abaco Pelican Cays for a swim off beautiful beaches (also various other islands) Tahiti Beach- long sand bar, wonderful for a swim Elbow cay with wonderful small resorts and restaurants/bars Lagoon between Scotland Cay and Guana Cay-- the South Pacific!! Guana Cay has beautiful beaches and the very popular Nippers Bar Guana also has the Guana Harbour Resort with dock and restaurant/bar Guest access The whole house is yours. Other things to note Kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher, microwave oven, coffee maker, toaster, blender, and refrigerator. The generator runs on DIESEL fuel which is at the renter's expense. Please note that Man O War is a dry island. You can't purchase liquor on the island so stop in Marsh Harbour to purchase or at the other islands you visit. There are 3 churches and you are welcome at all. You are also welcome at all the resorts in the area. Feel free to use their pools. It would be nice to dine and/or have some drinks at the same time.
