They have electronic lockers starting at €5 so you can visit the city without carrying luggage. 📍 Location & context: Our accommodations are located in the historic center, a few minutes' walk from several points of interest. Nearby is Plaza Vieja, the oldest square in the city, which originally emerged as a souk during the Muslim era. It is dominated by the City Hall, a 19th-century work by Trinidad Cuartara, with a clock that plays the Fandanguillo de Almería every hour. In its center stands the Pingurucho or Monument to the Martyrs of Freedom — a marble column with a solar sphere — erected in memory of the liberals executed by firing squad in 1824. In 2014, the Heritage Interpretation Center was opened on one side of the square. It explains the history of Almería from its origins to the present day. 🗺 Nearby places within walking distance: Convent of Santa Clara (Convent of the Claras), a 19th-century convent declared a Site of Cultural Interest; Civil War Shelters, with underground galleries that can be visited with a guide and are also open as a museum, located between 600 m and 1 km depending on the route and with an approximate reference of 670 m at one of the locations; Cathedral of the Incarnation, fortified, built between the 16th and 17th centuries, in late Gothic and Renaissance style, and declared a Site of Cultural Interest; the Alcazaba de Almería, a tenth-century Andalusian fortress with gardens, towers and ocean views; Puerta de Purchena and Paseo de las Tiendas, the commercial and social heart of the city; the Cervantes Theater, the Central Market and the Aljibes de Jayrán; the Church of Santiago Apóstol, in the sixteenth-century Gothic-Mudejar style; the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Mar, a late Gothic-Renaissance temple founded in the fifteenth century and restored after the fire of 1936; the Casino Cultural, a former nineteenth-century historicist palace with an Arab Hall and modernist decoration; and museums such as MUREC, Doña Pakyta, the Archaeological Museum and the Guitar Museum. 🎓 Tours and excursions: There are guided tours that include Plaza Vieja, the Refugios and the City Hall, and continue to the Cathedral, the Alcazaba and the Santuario de la Virgen del Mar. 🍷 Tapas and atmosphere: The historic center is recognized as one of the best tapas areas in Almería. In Plaza Vieja and its arcades, there are several tapas bars and breweries. La Tahona stands out, and a few steps away, on Calle Jovellanos, are Casa Puga, Jovellanos 16 and Taberna Nuestra Tierra, renowned for their specialty, atmosphere and quality. Just 100-200 meters away, there are also casual cafes and restaurants that are ideal for breakfast or quick tapas.
