Nearby is Plaza Vieja, the oldest square in the city, which originally emerged as a souk during the Muslim era. It is dominated by the City Hall, a 19th-century work by Trinidad Cuartara, with a clock that plays the Fandanguillo de Almería every hour. In its center stands the Pingurucho or Monument to the Martyrs of Freedom — a marble column with a solar sphere — erected in memory of the liberals executed by firing squad in 1824. In 2014, the Heritage Interpretation Center was opened on one side of the square.
