Description

We are offering our family home, a 1905 traditional Foursquare house for rent. In 2021 we converted this house into 3 apartments, & kept the largest one for ourselves. You'll love the wrap-around porch, hot-tub, & heated bathroom floors. We are centrally located in Buckman, an eclectic neighborhood in the highly walkable, heart of the SE. We are 3 blocks from Hawthorne's popular food carts, plus 300 bars & restaurants including Kachka, & the famous Clark Lewis. Full grocery is 2 blocks away. The space We purchased this home because of its location and potential. It was somewhat neglected as it was previously a home for juvenile delinquents. (No, really it was!) We decided to fix it up and now we live in it part-time. Because we live in it half the year, this is our actual residence, and as such, there is a more personal, lived-in feel to this home. If you are looking for a more unique experience that adds texture and warmth to your trip - like you are staying at your friend's house, that is what it feels like. We spent the first year of the pandemic renovating it, so modernizing with Heating/AC and new windows, etc., but kept all the traditional woodwork including turn of the century wood columns, wood paneling, hardwood floors, etc. The home was built in 1905 when Portland hosted the World's Fair. There were a lot of newcomers to the city, and much attention was given to bringing the natural world inside, making use of local wood, big windows, etc., and it was a time when people showed off the artistry and craft of their home. Our renovation was long and arduous ... but now, it is extremely comfortable! We know you will be happy with some of the new features such as French doors in the dining room that connect to a large backyard deck for a quiet breakfast, or taking in the huge Douglass Fir tree in the back garden. There is a hot tub under the tree too. Our unit occupies all of the main floor, a portion of the second with the main bedroom and bath en suite, and a tiny part of the basement for your washer/dryer. The main floor includes an old-world style foyer, a living room, a kitchen with large island for gathering, a dining room (which can also be used as a workspace), and two bedrooms, one of which may be used as an office also. The main floor has a full bath, with heated floors. The large front porch is great for morning coffee, dining, or happy hour. We have been very happy to sit outside and watch the world go by. In the back yard is a deck, next to a hot tub, and a barbecue for grilling. grilling. The Douglas fir tree is fantastic for keeping the rain off pets who need to go outdoors to potty. The other part of the year we live in San Diego. We have structured our lives like this because our teens live fulltime with their Mom (my husband's ex-wife) and although they love visiting us, while they are in high school, we committed to spending as much time as we could in their neck of the woods. We love both places very much, especially the juxtaposition of the rain vs desert. We hope you enjoy our place too. Guest access The streets of Buckman are all tree-lined, and the squirrel life is very entertaining. They like to make use of the large back yard too. Parking is only on the street. We find we walk to everything so our car goes unused. Other things to note Because the house is now 3 individual apartments, we have two long-term rentals on the property. The first apartment is in the basement. The second is upstairs in the back. They are completely separate from our unit, and both have their own entrance. The tenants are young, but quiet professionals, and have pets. You may see them using the yard, or coming and going. The other thing to note is there is no off street parking. Parking can be more challenging on weekends but we find we walk everywhere, and there is always parking within a couple of short blocks.
