The Boathouse at Bare Bones Bivouac
Description
The Boathouse is my favorite space! *NOW HAS ELECTRICITY!* It is small, cozy, comfortable and cheerful. I imagine it as a perfect writers hide-a-way... a daydreamers paradise. It has a set of twin-size bunk beds, so it would be perfect for your self for a short visit or an extended stay, or even traveling with a friend! The space Bare Bones Bivouac is a quiet place in a remote south western section of SD. It is considered high prairie, and neighboring cattle graze here twice a year in May and late September. There is wildlife in the night and early morning hours if you are tuned in. Many different plants grow here, and I try to avoid stepping on the flowers and definitely the cactus! We currently have three sleeping cabins and a tent site listed on AirBnb. The Cabin is the first building we built (started in 2012; finished in 2018), and is now the last in a row of sleeping spaces. The first you will pass is a small 12x8 ft building called the Boathouse (that's YOU!), and then the Barn in the middle, which looks like a skyscraper in comparison because the roof style allows for a sleeping loft inside. All of these have a view of Elk Mountain and its lookout tower, and a very large, ever changing sky! The lack of trees in that direction is the result of fire ten, and almost twenty, years ago and the reason we do not permit campfires on our land. Also, there is almost always a fire ban during July and August. Please be respectful of our property, the furnishings, nature all around you, and each other. Guest access 32 acres to explore, plus, The Elk Mountain Lookout Tower is a fun climb up the "hill". (1,000 ft in elevation and one mile back from our driveway) During your stay I "camp" at Bare Bones Bivouac during the summer months too, so I am almost always working around the property and available to answer questions or accommodate your needs. I am up with the sun and go to bed at dusk. You will find me down at the Admin Building (or behind it in the court yard or Clay De*Pot) from 6-11 am and this is the best time to visit with me, or plan your day. I love to hear your travel and adventure stories! Come on down for a cup of coffee, a water refill, or your wifi needs! Other things to note Bare Bones Bivouac is a future campground and clay space in the making. Construction projects happen throughout the summer months and generally do not interfere with guests. The interior of the Clay de•Pot was finished in 2023. This is my small Work/Shop located behind the Admin building where I sew or work on my hand-built pottery. You are welcome to see if I have work in progress, or peruse finished products while you enjoy your morning coffee. :) 2024 projects will get us closer to flush toilets in our Homestead building, and space will be designated for a wood-kiln... coming in 2025! PS I recommend sturdy closed toe shoes, rather than sandals or flip-flops. The grasses are wild, with cactus, thistles and pine cones. And there is the potential for a possible snake sighting! Yikes! ask me about that!
