Oranmore Castle - Galway Bay

Oranmore Castle is an 800 year old national monument located on the epic coastlines of Galway bay. The 13th century Norman castle was built by William De Burgo (Burke) and was the seat of to the Clanricarde’s for over 500 years, later becoming home to Galway wine merchants the Athy and Blake families and currently home to the Finn family (Leslie King) who have generationally maintained and restored the castle bringing it back from a complete ruined state beginning in 1947. The space After many years of requests by castle visitors, we opened our special Guest Room & Great Hall to a couple who wish to experience staying the night in an authentic castle steeped in ancient Irish history. The Great Hall is large open space with a church like roof reaching heights of over 30ft. The original wicker building technique is visible in the roof corners with whitewashed walls framing a large window looking out over the atlantic ocean. The Great hall is heated by a giant wood burning stove with a cosy couch to sit, relax and take in the stunning heart of this historical structure. The restful oak floored bedroom on the castle’s 2nd floor looks out over the joining pier & out to where the river meets the sea and where a variety of local wildlife can be viewed. The snug double bed has an ancient arrow slit window viewpoint looking out to the front of the castle’s gate & entrance. The colourful & beautiful tiled bathroom is decorated in an eclectic Balinese and Egyptian style & has a spacious sunflower shower. The village is a short 500 metre walk where you can find excellent restaurants, pubs & cafes or you can also have dinner delivered & dine in the Great Hall by candle light. Galway city is 9k away with taxis & regular buses to the city centre within a short walk. Shannon airport: 1 hr drive Dublin airport: 2hr drive There is also a train station stop a 2k walk away.
