Luxury Private Villa with pool on hilltop
Kukulkan is a unique luxury Villa built on our private 50-acre reserve and designed by Brendan O’Donoghue, the leading designer for the finest hotels in Belize. It is also my dream home built after two years of work in 2006 out of solid hardwoods and sitting aloft steel beams overlooking the magnificent Macal River Valley. The space Although it is custom made in the jungle, Kukulkan is a modern home with floor to ceiling windows on the valley side and efficient AC in each bedroom. Sliding doors in the two master suites, and the great room, lead to expansive decks where guests can watch the toucans and other birds or the sunrise twenty feet off the ground or just enjoy dinner or a barbecue. We didn’t want to tear down nature to put up power lines, so we installed our own power and water system. At first, it was diesel but as part of the total renovation we completed in the last two years, we installed a large solar system, and 3 Tesla Powerwalls to silently provide our power. In case of rain or high-power usage, we also put in a new 21 kw backup butane generator. Solar power also sends our rainwater up to our own water tower in a system that crosses the property and allows gravity to feed the entire Villa. We reopened the Villa after a recent renovation on Jan 1, 2023. During the renovation, we sanded and refurbished all our solid hardwood floors, painted all walls and replaced and redesigned a brand new 2000 square-feet wooden deck that opens on to our unique fan shaped glass tiled pool. Isai, who is a young man who I was honored to sponsor in school and is now an account manager with Frances Ford Coppola hotels in Belize, will be your host and can always be reached in advance of your stay to make any arrangements for you. His sister Esther and her husband George live in their own house on Kukulkan property and will keep the house clean and be there full time for anything you might need. Isai, Esther and George are all from the village of San Antonio and of Mayan heritage. INTERNET - We have fast and reliable WIFI throughout the house and on the outdoor decks. Unless there is a bad storm or power is out in town, you can count on good internet service throughout your stay. AC AND FANS - Our Villa’s three bedrooms are each air-conditioned with efficient and effective remote controlled AC units. Modern fans are also throughout the house. With many nights being quite cool, we suggest you slide open the fully screened windows and put the fan on low and enjoy the fresh air and sounds of the night. But don’t be surprised how noisy the birds can be at dawn! Privacy curtains are on all bedroom windows, but actually, the two main bedrooms no one can see inside except perhaps the toucans. SHOWERS - Each of the bedrooms has its own private distinctive marble bathroom with a large walk-in shower. The big master bedroom even has another shower on the deck. THE VIEW - Our 2000 square-feet of newly rebuilt elevated decks and large windows overlook the beautiful jungle valley below. The villa is elevated 15-20 feet off the ground on the valley view side and features full-length sliding glass windows and spectacular views. STARGAZING - Looking at the stars at night from the deck is beyond belief. It is totally wondrous, and even more if you just lay down on our big bath towels or chaise and look straight up! KAYAKING - We have several kayaks and almost one mile of riverfront. George will happily help you take them down to the river and take a 3rd small kayak and even go kayaking with you if you like. HIKING TRAILS - Kukulkan has miles of private, maintained trails on our 50-acre reserve. George will be happy to take you for a hike on the trails or down to the Macal River. It will be a memorable experience. And don’t worry about mosquitoes - with our many hills they rarely appear. PRIVATE POOL - Our very private swimming Pool is not visible to any staff that may be working outside. The pool is fully glass tiled with views that are magnificent as it is at the same elevated level as the decks. You can reach the pool from the main deck and guest bedroom deck or from the hallway. TOUCANS - Keel Billed toucans and Aracari toucans are frequent visitors and are easily seen on the trumpet trees next to the Villa. And the sounds of Howler Monkeys can often be heard in the distance. (Sometimes closer and louder, but always in the trees). Kukulkan’s design is all about being part of the environment. HUNGRY - Esther can make you lots of dishes and George does a great outdoor barbecue. If you let us know what you want before you arrive, George and Esther will go shopping for you. You will be sent a list of the items we can get you. You only need choose to the items and let us know before you come. WHAT FOODS - Well, almost anything. We can pick up homemade Greek or regular yoghurts and granola made by a nearby farm from their own milk cows. Ms. Janet with Cool Shade Farm also makes wonderful whole wheat bread. We can buy oranges and squeeze fresh orange juice and buy you milk or ice cream or any supplies. And George can barbecue any meats or veggies you like, or if you prefer just get our wood barbecue grill going and let you do it. It’s up to you. We can supply you with a menu after you book for Esther and George to buy and prepare foods for you during your stay at very reasonable cost or if you prefer to buy your own food supplies George will help you do that, and Esther is always happy to help you in the kitchen and will clean up the next day. George is also great at making a nice wood fired BarBQ on the deck. Remember the services of George and Esther are always free to our guests. We leave the tipping up to you. WHAT DISHES CAN ESTHER COOK - Here is a partial list. You’ll get a complete list to choose from before you arrive. Just let us know in advance. Soups including Escabeche (Mayan onion soup), beef soup, and chicken soup. Traditional Belizean rice and beans with your choice of meat. And …Tamales handmade, tacos al pastor, empanadas, salbutes, garnaches, burritos, quesadillas etc. And Esther makes all tortillas, whether flour or corn tortillas, by hand. They are so delicious! SWEETS - Banana pudding, sweet potato pudding, bread pudding, coconut crust, cinnamon rolls, banana muffins and even chocolate chip cookies. It’s up to you. Just tell us in advance so we can get the ingredients. Pricing is very reasonable, and you’ll see it in advance. JIUCES - Yes, Esther and George can make you orange juice or papaya, lime, watermelon or even fresh pineapple juice! We go to the farmers market in San Ignacio and get you whatever you want. RESTAURANTS - There are several nice restaurants 10 minutes away in San Ignacio including San Ignacio Hotel and Guava Limb and others at resorts. Just ask and we will get you reservations. YOGA - Our large decks overlooking the Macal River Valley are perfect for Yoga whether groups or individuals. GROUPS - Kukulkan is a perfect location for families or small group of up to 10 people. There are 5 beds in 3 bedrooms plus a double size futon and a comfy couch. TESLA OFF GRID POWER - Take a look at our Tesla Powerwall room next to our garage. The new Tesla units are state-of-the-art technology with plenty of storage to make your visit comfortable. They are usually charged by the rooftop solar arrays, but, if necessary, they are backed up by a Generac backup generator. WATER - Kukulkan is 100% off grid with water supplied by the rain and a solar pump sending all the water to our own water tower. Gravity feeds water to the marble showers - so, we always have power and water - even if it shuts down in town. EATING OUTSIDE - Stay home and dine on the main deck with our outdoor seating for eight. Esther and George will make sure you have what you like on the table. TRIPS - We can arrange everything for you. If you want to rent a car, we suggest a 4WD SUV as roads can be rough in beautiful Belize. We are happy to recommend some car rental agencies to you. If you are driving, George will meet you in San Ignacio and lead you to Kukulkan. You can’t entirely rely on GPS in Belize and our Villa is not easy to find. RATHER NOT DRIVE - We can set you up with a reliable pick-up at the airport or in Belize City or anywhere in Belize from a very reliable Tour Guide service that our owner uses. They know exactly where we are, and we can book and pay in advance. You can’t just get in a taxi as they would not be able to find us. Taxis in Belize are for inside towns, not really finding a private Villa. BUT WHAT TRIPS - Of course, we suggest you relax at Kukulkan as much as possible and enjoy our 50-acre reserve. But we can easily arrange licensed tour guides to take you to Mayan ruins like Xunantunich or Caracol or up to the Pine Ridge Reserve and Big Rock Falls or for Zip lining not far away or even tubing in the Macal River. There is so much to do in the Cayo region, and its all-day trips. We are happy to send you a list of outings we can arrange either in your own vehicle or with our recommended tour guides, who will pick you up and drop you off. Just come see us. Stay at Kukulkan, and we can all work together to make it happen and make your trip to Belize a memorable and exciting experience. Guest access The entire Villa and the 50-acre reserve will be available to you. Other things to note Esther can also make you corn or flour tortillas by hand at your request as well as traditional local Mayan dishes.
