Tree House Retreat - Great Barrier Island
Tree House Retreat - Great Barrier Island
Description
Enjoy a "glamping" experience at our our unique and tranquil little cabin, which is surrounded by bush and just a 5 minute walk away from the beautiful Okupu Beach (Blind Bay). The space The cabin is a comfortable secluded getaway equipped with all the holiday "glamping" essentials including outdoor eating area, cozy bedroom, a gas cooker, shower, and a balcony with a stunning view of the surrounding bush. The kitchen is outside (under cover) with optional side coverings as well. There is an outdoor bench / table or an indoor table. All basic kitchen / cooking supplies are provided. All bed linen and towels will also be supplied. There is a private outdoor shower and separate long-drop toilet which you will need to go outside to access, but is only a short distance away from the cabin. There is plenty of parking available on site. Access to the cabin is via approximately 20 steps and a pathway. This cabin is unfortunately not suitable for guests with mobility issues. Our family bach is located on the same property as the cabin, however is unlikely to be occupied during your stay and is private and separate from the cabin if there are people staying in the main house. SOLAR POWER The cabin, like the rest of the island, runs off solar power only. Our system is very good and our batteries have never drained in the past, but please do be mindful of this. We ask that you do not use hairdryers, straighteners, or any other appliances that draw a large amount of power. WIFI / RECEPTION We have good wifi connection and reception/service at the cabin. THE AREA: We are just 5 minutes away from the nearest beach - a quiet and calm little bay great for swimming, walking, spotting the dolphins and watching the sunset. There is a lovely coastal walkway that goes from this beach over to the next bay. Please note that there is a Rahui in place on the West Coast of the island due to an invasive weed called "Caulerpa". This means that fishing, spear-diving, and anchoring boats in Okupu bay is prohibited. The other beaches on the East Coast of the Island are unaffected by this seaweed. Claris, the island's main town centre, is about a 10 minute drive away from the cabin. Here you will find the airport, a small grocery store, alcohol store, cafe, laundromat, post shop, bike hire shop, and art gallery. Please note, the cost of petrol, food / drink is slightly higher on the island than on the mainland. There are plenty of things to see and do on the island - including beautiful walks, surfing, beautiful beaches etc. We have a little guide book in the cabin that explains some of these things in more detail. GETTING AROUND THE ISLAND: We highly recommend hiring a car or electric bikes to explore other parts of the island and get the most out of your time here, or you can take the car ferry and bring your own car over to the island. We are more than happy to direct you to some rental companies. Hitchhiking is common and usually pretty easy on this island, but of course can be trickier to plan and it is never guaranteed you will get a ride. GETTING TO THE ISLAND: The most common ways to get to the island are by ferry (Sealink) or plane (Barrier Air). Ferry - passenger and car ferry arrives at Tryphena or Whangaparapara Wharf, about a 20-35 minute drive from these wharves to the cabin. Plane - arrives at Claris Ariport, about a 10-15 minute drive to the cabin. Rental cars are available to pick up from the airport, and e-bikes are available to pick up a short walk away from the airport. Flexible check-in / check-out times may be available upon request, but otherwise please assume the check in/ check out times are as listed. Guest access Our family bach is located on the same property as the cabin, however is unlikely to be occupied during your stay and is private and separate from the cabin if there are people staying in the main house.
