Other things to note Before Arriving at Volcanoes Over View Safaris & Camp 1. The Altitude and Climate Your camp is situated near the park headquarters, meaning you will be at a high elevation, offering spectacular views but requiring preparation: High Altitude: The camp sits at a high altitude (near 2,ooom). If arriving directly from a low-altitude area, be prepared to feel the effects of the elevation. Take it easy on your first day, stay hydrated. Mountain Weather: The weather is highly unpredictable. Mornings and evenings are very cold, often dropping to 6∘C to 11∘C (43 ∘F to 52 ∘F). Daytime temperatures are mild but can change quickly. Layered clothing is essential. Rain and Mist: Expect frequent, unpredictable rain and mist, even during the dry season. Our Deluxe Tents are cozy, but always carry a rain jacket. 2. Camp Logistics & Comfort Even though our tents are luxurious, they are safari tents in a remote area: Check-In Time: Activities often start very early (around 6:30 AM), so coordinating your arrival time with us is crucial, especially if you plan to trek the day after you land. Power & Wi-Fi: We provide reliable Wi-Fi, but kindly note that all amenities, including the hot shower, are generated for your tent, meaning we encourage responsible energy consumption. Bring a universal adapter for charging devices. Cash for Extras: While most major payments can be made by card, it is advisable to carry small amounts of Rwandan Francs (RWF) or US Dollars (small bills) for tips, souvenirs, and local purchases. Before Your Volcanoes National Park Adventure If your trip includes Gorilla or Golden Monkey trekking, paying attention to these details is critical: 1. Permits and Documentation The park has strict entry requirements: Permit is Mandatory: You must have your Gorilla or Golden Monkey trekking permit booked well in advance. Without a permit, you cannot enter the park for trekking. Original Passport: You must bring your original passport to the Park Headquarters (Kinigi) for the early morning briefing. 2. The Trekking Gear (Crucial Packing List) The terrain can be steep, muddy, and covered in dense, stinging nettles. Proper gear ensures safety and comfort: Item Importance Notes Waterproof Hiking Boots Essential Must be worn high and have good ankle support. Gaiters Highly Recommended To prevent mud, water, and insects (like safari ants) from entering your boots. Thick Gardening Gloves Essential For grasping thorny vegetation and branches for support on slippery slopes. Long-Sleeved Shirt & Trousers Essential To protect your skin from sharp undergrowth, nettles, and insects. Waterproof Rain Gear Highly Recommended A light waterproof jacket or poncho. Trekking Daypack Essential To carry water, packed lunch, extra layers, and camera gear. Cash for Porters Essential Hiring a local porter ($10-$15 USD) is highly recommended for support on the hike and is a vital way to support the local community. 3. Health, Safety, and Etiquette Fitness Level: Be aware that the trek can range from 1 to 8 hours and involves climbing slippery, steep slopes at high altitudes. A reasonable level of fitness is required. Protecting the Gorillas: If you are feeling ill (even a simple cold or flu), you must notify your guide. Gorillas are highly susceptible to human illness. You may be asked to wear a mask or, in extreme cases, skip the trek to protect the endangered primates. Photography: Flash photography is strictly forbidden near the gorillas. Ensure you know how to turn the flash off on your camera. Trekking Rule: You are limited to one hour of viewing time with the gorillas.
