Description
Our beautiful home very comfortably sleeps 9 guests. Well off the beaten track on a hillside overlooking the stunning Cajamarca Valley, you’ll love the views across the valley towards the 4,000 m high Andean peaks. With a fully equipped kitchen, wood burning fireplace, hot water and heating, WIFI, walled garden and 2 hectares of land, it’s ideal for a relaxing family holiday, nature lovers looking to connect with Pachamama, digital nomads, and artists/writers looking for inspiration. The space “Everyone need beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.” - John Muir - Inspired by these wise words of John Muir, our spacious, rustic-style house is a truly cosy nest, providing a tranquil retreat for you and your family to unwind and relax in. We built our house using traditional Andean methods, with almost exclusively locally sourced natural materials, such as compacted earth, adobe bricks, stone, wood, reeds, and clay tiles for the roof, all from the surrounding countryside. We even built an extension with a bedroom and a bathroom using straw bales. The soft furnishings and decor of Hummingbird House pay homage to the natural, gentle hues and textures of the Andes. The big windows make our house light and airy, letting in as much of the magical Andean sunlight as possible. Enjoy your breakfast in the dining room bathed in morning sunshine, or relax on the soft sofas and cushions in the living room habitually kindled in a soft orange and amber light at sunset. The many house plants throughout our home only serve to enhance the wholesome, natural feel of Hummingbird House. Relax in front of the roaring fireplace in the cool mountain evenings, or in the many hammocks dotted around our land in the warm afternoons. Have a game or two of table tennis, or a volley ball or badminton match on the front lawn. It’s up to you. Alpaca-lined house slippers and hot water bottles are available for use by all our guests to ensure your stay is as cozy as possible. Of course, all the modern comforts of space heating and hot water, HD TV, wifi, a fully equipped kitchen, and the security systems will ensure that you and your family have a fabulous time in “Hummingbird House” Ecolodge & Retreat. Guest access You will have exclusive use of the whole house, including the front balcony and side terrace, lawns and barbecue stand. The two car garage and the laundry room are for your exclusive use also. Please feel free to ramble around the 2 Ha (5 acres) of surrounding land, we have the best panoramic view-point of the city and valley of Cajamarca, yours to enjoy from sunrise to sunset. And at dark on clear nights, there’s no better place to star-gaze and count shooting stars! Other things to note You couldn’t choose a better base from which to explore the hidden gems of northern Peru. The northern Andes and Pacific coast are especially rich in pre-inca archeological sights, as well as abundant natural beauty and wildlife that will take your breath away. Hummingbird House Ecolodge & Retreat is situated mid way between the coastal desert wonders on one side, and the cloud forest and Amazon Basin on the other. The Chan Chan adobe city of the Chimu culture and the Huacas de la Luna y del Sol near Trujillo, the Lord of Sipan - Moche culture museum in Chichlayo, the very impressive walled citadel of Kuelp and the Karajai Sarcofagos of the Chachapyas culture, the Gocta Falls, and Huembo Ecological Reserve and its endemic Spatuletail Hummingbird, are all within several hours drive through stunning and amazingly varied scenery from Cajamarca. But if you prefer to take it easy and have your adventures closer to home, Cajamarca and the nearby town of Baños del Inca are of course full of fascinating places to visit and relax in, including the Plaza de Armas and its many Baroque colonial churches and buildings, the Inca Baths, the Ransom Room … Cajamarca is in fact the place where the Spanish first captured, ransomed, and then killed the last Inca king, Atahualpa, in 1533. The important pre-incan sites of Kuntur Huasi, Cumbe Mayo and Otuzco are not far from Cajamarca. Our partner tourist agencies will be more than happy to arrange day trips and multi-day tours for you and your family. Their very experienced local guides speak English and French in addition to Spanish.
