The Waterfall House is a world unto itself. The 7500 sq ft converted inn is a magical place evoking a lost epoque of salons, great hall lounging, & dance hall feasts. It's a unique place to go and dream, celebrate, or re-discover the wonder in life. Built as roadside inn in 1852, the Victorian-era Waterfall House overlooks the Western Catskills' beautiful Schoharie Valley, known as the most fertile valley east of the Mississippi... For many years it has been the private residence of artists from New York City, who lovingly restored the place while leaving it's unique poetic elegance and extraordinary character intact. With a huge "Great Hall" on the second floor, a "Dance Hall" on the ground floor, and a period bar and adjoining game room (with both a pool and regulation shuffleboard table) the Waterfall House is a historic gathering place that has been used for countless festivities, celebrations and gatherings for over 150 years. There are a total of 20 beds in the house of various sizes, 2.5 bathrooms, and 2 seasonal outdoor showers (with hot water) Around the Great Hall are 5 private bedrooms with 9 beds: 3 bedrooms have a full size bed; 1 bedroom has a full and two twins; and 1 bedroom has a full and a bunk bed. For those needing extra sleeping space we also have a 1000sf lounge with chandeliers, cut velvet wallpaper as well as 11+ extra beds for elegant slumber party style sleeping. (3 full size, 7 singles/daybeds, a futon, plus a several thick cotton Thai bedrolls) With the windows open, the gentle rush of Kenhuragara Falls can be heard from most rooms in the house -- a sound that's been known to lull you to the sweetest, deepest sleep imaginable :) Guests have access to the entire house and property. Generally interaction with guests is at a minimum. This is your time to be with friends and family. We are back and forth between Brooklyn and the waterfall house, so if we are not around for your arrival, there will be someone local or nearby to help you if needed. Occasionally we might be in another wing of the house (the owner's quarters as opposed to the guest quarters), for which there is a separate entrance, separate bathrooms, kitchen, etc. so it will not interfere with your privacy or having the house to yourself. Surrounded by 50 acres of both private wooded land and wide-open fields of wildflowers, the Waterfall House is located in the Western Catskills' beautiful Schoharie Valley, reputedly the most fertile valley east of the Mississippi, where most of the food for General Washington's troops was grown. It is still unspoiled farm country, and there are many local farms with fresh produce and organic meat within 5 miles of the house. For over 200 years the majestic waterfall right behind the house, called Kenhuragara Falls by the Mohawks to whom this land originally belonged, has been a secret place revered for its spectacular and serene beauty. Coursing between two outcroppings in a deep ravine, the waterfall crashes down over mossy rock shelves into a hidden pool, which then empties again into the river, running into glass-like swimming holes and through dramatic clay beds. The effect is transporting. Truly, it is one of those extraordinarily beautiful spots on earth that makes you feel like you are in another world. There is no convenient public transportation to the house. You will need a car to shop, and generally get around. There is, however, public transportation that takes you not far from the house for guests who need to arrive via train or bus. TRAIN: Take Amtrak to either Hudson or Albany/Renssalear (both 55 minutes from house)... then take taxi or arrange pick up from there BUS: Take Adirondack Trailways to Grand Gorge (15 miles away from the house)... then take a taxi or arrange pick up from there.
