Newly remodeled in January 2021, Curlew is a semi-oceanfront house nestled in the village of Salvo. Ideal for couples seeking a romantic retreat and families wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, Curlew feels cozy while maintaining Hatteras Island charm and natural beauty. A well-appointed cottage with comforts of home, Curlew invites you to unwind and relax! Built in 1980 by the current owner’s grandfather and father, this cozy cottage was one of the first rental properties in Salvo. Over the last 40 years, Curlew has continued to host and amaze visitors with its prime ocean-side location, just yards away from the Atlantic Ocean, and stunning views of sunsets over the Pamlico Sound. Modern upgrades and renovations were completed on the property in February 2021. Beautiful craftsmanship, natural lighting, and simple comfortable furnishings create an aesthetic that allows your mind and body to unwind after a day of fun. The main gathering area is open with an open concept full kitchen and living area. There are two private bedrooms, both with queen size beds and doors that lock for your privacy, one full-sized bathroom, and a master suite with a king size bed and its own private half bath. A front deck runs the length of the house and offers additional entertaining space; allowing you to live indoors or out. An outdoor shower helps you to rinse off the beach and enjoy the splendor of outdoor bathing. We are friendly to all guests, but please note that we do not provide a crib, high chair, and other items for infants and toddlers. But please feel free to bring what you need if you are traveling with small children. Also, due to local regulations, infants and toddlers must be included in the total guest count. There is off-street parking for up to two vehicles in an paved driveway next to the cottage. The entire house and yard is free for you to enjoy during your stay. If you would like to use the new gas firepit, you will need to refill the propane tank at any of the refill stations located in Rodanthe, Waves, or Salvo. If you would like it refilled prior to your arrival, there will be a $25 separate charge through Airbnb. Please let me know at least 24 hours before check in if you would like this service. Please leave the outdoor firepit area as you find it for the next guest to enjoy. There will be a $300 additional cleaning fee if there is food/trash found inside the outdoor firepit area. The beach access is located at the end of the street between the 4 ocean front homes. There is a small wooden fence with an opening. Please walk through the opening and follow the path through the dunes to the beautiful Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Be sure and check out the pre-Civil War shipwreck, "Old Richmond", peaking above the waves. The entire home is accessible for your enjoyment. There is a primitive beach access with a double dune line at the end of the street. The access is not handicap accessible. It is highly recommended to wear shoes across the dunes and to stay on the path. Curlew is located less than one half mile from the Salvo Day Use Area; an opportune spot for families with smaller children to explore the Pamlico Sound and for adults and older children looking to kayak, kiteboard, canoe, and watch beautiful sunsets. In addition, there are several four-wheel drive beach access for guests to enjoy near the cottage with the purchase of a permit from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Curlew is owned and operated by a native Hatteras Island family. We live 25 miles north of Salvo in Kill Devil Hills; one of the towns on the northern Outer Banks. Curlew is located on an ocean-side street less than 50 yards to the beautiful and surreal Cape Hatteras National Seashore overlooked by the Old Richmond; a Civil War era shipwreck! Curlew is minutes away from a multitude of Hatteras Island’s hidden wonders and historical landmarks including the Salvo Day Use Area, four-wheel drive beach access, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Chicamicomico Life Saving Station, Kitty Hawk Kites, and miles of untouched beaches. Hatteras Island relishes in charm compared to other Outer Banks locations, with its remote feel and beautiful natural environment. Most of the island is owned by either the National Park Service or the U.S. Department of Wildlife, including all ocean and sound beaches. There is tremendously less development than other Outer Banks towns and villages. Due to the quaintness of Salvo, there is not a large-scale shopping center in the village. Instead, the majority of businesses are locally-owned with the exception of a Food Lion grocery store in the village of Avon. We aim to provide essentials for your vacation. Sheets, bedspreads, blankets, pillows, hand towels, washcloths, and towels are all provided and are washed using hypoallergenic laundry detergent. Beach items, such as chairs, umbrellas, bikes, and coolers, are available for sale or rent through local businesses scattered up and down the Outer Banks. Finally, living so close to the natural environment, we strive to be as eco-friendly as possible in our home. We ask you to join in our efforts including disposing of trash in public or personal trash cans, conserving energy and water, and recycling.
