The Burlington Hotel & Bar was built with 12 sleeping rooms for railroad workers in 1891. Located in Alma along the Mississippi River and still along active railroad tracks, it was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1982. The hotel now features 5 bedrooms for up to 12 guests, a bar & a shop called 'Queen Bee Alma' offering crochet & craft classes. Location: 1/2 mile from the marina/beach, a few doors down from Kwik Trip, and a short walk to the bars & shops, downtown Alma. The Burlington Hotel is the first commercial building you see when you enter Alma from the North. The hotel's second story balcony faces the river, and offers unobstructed views of the sunset over the Mississippi looking towards the bluffs on the Minnesota side. The upper-level houses 5 guest rooms. You are renting #1. The owners' apartment is on the same level. The 2 bathrooms on the upper level are in the hallway. There is also a half-bath on the entrance level that is always available to guests. Alma's a fun, touristy town with small shops, museums, bluff-overlook park, winery, bakery, restaurants, bars, & a KwikTrip. Popular reasons to visit Alma: Mississippi River Lock & Dam #4, trains/barges, eagle watching, fall foliage tours, hunting & fishing (all seasons), ladies' weekends, family reunions, motorcycle enthusiasts, R&R, craft retreats, nature, kayaking/boating. Close to Mpls/St. Paul (1.5 hrs), Eau Claire (58 min), Rochester (70 min), LaCrosse (63 min). Guests will use stairs to get to private Bedroom #1. On the same/upper level, there are 2 bathrooms for all guests. On the lower level, there is one half-bath for all guests. A keypad will grant access at front entrance and will be provided prior to 3pm. Guest room key will be in #1's lock along with a back door key. Kitchenette has microwave & Keurig for coffee & tea self-service. There are dishes/glasses/silverware, but they must be cleaned by guest after use. Microwave. Small sitting/TV room on upper level has a mini-fridge for guests. Owners live on-site. Owners are available during the day and evenings, on call through the night for emergencies. Owners may also use the bathroom & kitchenette. 8 houses down from Kwik Trip. Nice neighbors. The hotel entrance is right on the sidewalk. Next is the street (WI Great River Road), next are the 2 railroad tracks, then the Mississippi River. There is a cross-walk to the river. The trains are frequent. A lot of things to do and see in walking distance. Shops, bars, restaurants, gas station, bakery, beach, pier, lock & dam viewing station, foot bridge above the railroad tracks. Sidewalk into downtown (less than 1 mile). Safe at night. The lower-level bar is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 5-10pm. It is a full-service bar, and there are two bar cats. There is no elevator due to the historic nature of the building. There are 18 steps in front, and six in back. Trains, boats and cars pass by in the night, and you can hear them. Earplugs are provided in each guest room.
