Other things to note IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING REFUNDS AND ADVERSE WEATHER: Kirkwood is all about huge storms and tons of snow. Up here, a blizzard is a blessing, but please plan accordingly. During the winter, I highly recommend purchasing travel insurance to best protect yourself in the event of adverse weather. Highway 88 is the one and only road into Kirkwood. If you are approaching from the west, you will drive over the Carson Spur on Hwy 88 right before Kirkwood. If you approaching from the east, you will drive over Carson Pass on Hwy 88 right before Kirkwood. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS FOR ADVERSE WEATHER EXCEPT IN THE VERY UNLIKELY EVENT THAT BOTH THE CARSON SPUR AND CARSON PASS ARE COMPLETELY AND CONTINUOUSLY CLOSED TO TRAFFIC FROM 6 A.M. TO MIDNIGHT (18 CONSECUTIVE HOURS EACH) ON THE DAY OF YOUR SCHEDULED ARRIVAL. This is an exceptionally rare event, as even in major storms Carson Pass will normally remain open, subject only to brief closures for avalanche blasting or other snow safety. Carson Spur however (the last stretch of Highway 88 before Kirkwood if you are approaching from the Bay Area) will almost always close temporarily for two to three hours for avalanche blasting if it has snowed roughly 18 inches or more. If it has snowed two feet or more, it is very likely that the Spur will be closed for six hours or more at a time, and often overnight. If the Spur is closed, you can reach Kirkwood from the Bay Area by taking Highway 50 to Meyers, taking Highway 89 briefly, and then connecting again to Highway 88 and the Carson Pass. Without traffic, that route is approximately 35 minutes longer than the normal route you would take through Jackson and up Highway 88 and the Carson Spur. If BOTH the Carson Spur and Carson Pass are COMPLETELY AND CONTINUOUSLY closed to traffic from 6 a.m. to midnight on the day of your arrival (18 consecutive hours), your room rate will be refunded for that day only. Only if BOTH the Carson Spur and Carson Pass remained completely and continuously closed the next day from 6 a.m. to midnight (18 consecutive hours) would the second day be refunded, etc. There is no refund for your entire reservation in the event that roads are completely closed on one or more days of your reservation. Again, I highly recommend purchasing travel insurance to best protect yourself in the event of adverse weather. There are no other refunds for weather other than those specifically stated above.
