There is hustle and bustle in Downtown TC, especially in the summer months. If you are very sensitive to sound or privacy or are looking for a super quiet retreat, this space may not be the best option for you. That doesn't mean that this is a generally noisy space. The overwhelming majority of our guests absolutely love the space and the location, and they don't usually have any issues with noise. Every now and then we have guests who are extra sensitive to noise or who have an issue with it. For some, it is sufficient that we provide white noise machines fans in every unit. For others, ear plugs may help them sleep better. The building is well insulated. The exterior brick walls are over a foot thick and the windows are double paned. During our renovation, we actually went through great lengths to build a quieter space. We installed double ceilings and double walls between each and every unit. We have double the studs and double the thickness of normal walls and ceilings, double the drywall, and double the thickness of sound insulation installed vs what was recommended during our renovation. That takes care of most of the noise between units. Even still, the brick walls can carry some sound between floors on a 130 year old building. The excess insulation helps a lot but this won't completely eliminate sound between upstairs and downstairs units. If someone is obnoxiously loud or running around and shouting in the unit above you, you may hear it. For this reason, we do ask that all of our guests are extra respectful of each other's need for quiet time in the building after 10pm. We also ask that if they don't respect your or our policy, that you please let us know while it is happening. If you give us a chance to handle it, we promise you we won't let you down. If you wait until after checkout to mention any issue, we won't have the opportunity to resolve a situation for you while it is well within our power to do so. It definitely helps that the bedroom in this unit is located along a shared brick wall in such a way that you are protected from outside noise while you sleep. The sofa bed, however, is in the main living space, which is along the ally. There can be some street noise from pedestrian and vehicle traffic in the alley at times, including from delivery trucks and trash pickup. As a result, this bed isn't as good for the light sleepers out there. As far as privacy goes, we have installed top down bottom up blackout blinds in every unit. These things are awesome if you know how to use them properly. To realize their benefit, you have to pull them down from the top. When you do this, you maintain a level of privacy on the ground level while also letting in natural light from above. This flat is ideal for people who want a safe, comfortable, well appointed rental with lots of charm and character in a super accessible location to walk everywhere downtown. If you want a scenic view of the outdoors, this space may not be the best option, unless of course you are willing to walk a short distance to get it. If you need a lot of natural light, just pull the blinds down from the top to maintain street level privacy and you will be amazed by how much this helps.
