West Itchenor is a highly regarded sailing village, with its popular Sailing Club and launch facilities at all states of the tide and a very friendly community. Located in Chichester Harbour, surrounded by farmland much of which is protected and designated a National Landscape (formerly AONB), West Itchenor is a haven for wildlife and offers unrivalled opportunities for sailing, birdwatching and outdoor pursuits. The village also has a beautiful church, St Nicholas’ Church, dating to about the year 1180. There are also three very popular local public houses/restaurants closeby; The Ship near the harbour in the heart of the village (less than 1-min walk), The Quarterdeck along the foreshore (2-min walk) and The Lamb on the Chichester/West Wittering Road (5-min drive). West Itchenor dates from the Roman era and was subsequently resettled by the Anglo Saxons and takes its name from the chieftain Icca, who laid claim to its shoreline, originally known as Iccanore ('Icca's shore’), which translates as “Icca’s Landing Place’, the name of which eventually became ‘Itchenor’ during about the 12th century. Aside from sailing, leisure facilities within the area include golf at Goodwood and Hunston, West Wittering's blue flag sandy beach some 3 miles away, and horse racing events held at Fontwell and Goodwood where the annual Festival of Speed, Revival and motor meetings are also hosted. The mainline station in Chichester provides a regular service to London Victoria in about 1 hour 40 minutes, and Havant station to the west provides a faster service to London Waterloo in about 1 hour 20 minutes.
