Your cozy cabin at Camp Miramichee Falls is located on a wooded hillside, a short walk to the river, and just two miles from downtown Hardy and Cherokee Village. This historic stone cabin is one of several that we own on a wooded hillside above the Southfork River. Your cabin has a private bathroom inside the cabin (added June 2023). Enjoy the comforts of air conditioning and a real bed after a day on the river. There is a small TV with Wifi and Roku. You will have access to a grill and outdoor picnic area, but there is no kitchen in your cabin. You will have a microwave, a coffee maker and a refrigerator. We have a minimal amount of disposable dishes for your use, but no pots or pans. The cabin is up a gravel/dirt road and there is parking for one vehicle close to the cabin. If you need additional parking, let us know and we can show you where you can park and walk to the cabin. You will have private use of your cabin. You may use our guest river access to put in and take out for river floats. We have kayaks for your use around the waterfront. And, there are several outfitters in town that will shuttle you on the Spring River. There is also a large private park directly across the river where you can spend the day fishing and swimming for a $5 per person day use fee. We live in the cabin at the bottom of the hill. We will meet you at the cabin when you arrive to show you around. Please arrive before dark and use our maps, not GPS. GPS will take you to the wrong location. It can be difficult to find in the dark for the first time. Thanks! History of Camp Miramichee Camp Miramichee was founded in 1916 as a retreat for girls. It maintained its role as a haven for girls and their families through World War II, but in the 1940s also began to offer a program for younger girls. By the 1950s Camp Miramichee was wholly devoted to providing leadership and athletic opportunities for girls 10 through 18, with canoeing, swimming, crafts, archery and other activities, as well the chance to flirt with the Boy Scouts. In 1989 skyrocketing liability insurance rates forced the camp to close. However, in 2005 former campers began to reconnect and have held annual summer reunions in Hardy every year since, complete with white-water canoe trips and Indian dances. In 2019, we purchased five of the original Miramichee stone cabins which have been renovated. “In 1916, Camp Miramichee was founded by Sophie Kraus of Memphis, Tennessee, on the banks of the South Fork of the Spring River in Hardy, Arkansas. A few weeks at Camp Miramichee was a defining experience for generations of young women and girls from Memphis and the Mississippi and Arkansas Deltas. The skills they acquired on the river went far beyond swimming, canoeing and weaving baskets. They gained self-confidence, self-reliance and leadership skills as they made lifelong friends. These friendships and the shared bonds of exploration and tests of courage and faith tie generations of Miramichee girls together to this day.”1 The camp operated at this location until 1978. It then moved to a more remote site, seven miles upstream on the South Fork of the Spring River. The last year of the YWCA Camp Miramichee was 1989. Being a Camp Miramichee camper myself, I was drawn back to the area as an adult. I met and married my husband who was living at the old camp. In 2019, we acquired and renovated some of the original Miramichee stone cabins. While preserving as much of the camp history as we could, we added modern creature comforts to the original cabin experience. We offer 2 cabins on the river and 3 cabins on a wooded hillside for rent here at Camp Miramichee Falls. Across from Camp Miramichee was the Girl Scout’s Camp Kiwani, also started in 1916. It relocated to Middleton, Tennessee in 1962. We have 3 cabin rentals at Kiwanie Lake (the spelling changed after the camp moved) as part of our Camp Miramichee Falls experience. My husband and I live here at the original Camp Miramichee and are stewards of the land. We love and honor its history and do our best to preserve and share it. 1. Phillips, Lyda.
