Extensive forests and mountain meadows, fast-flowing streams and beautiful views make the area an eldorado for nature lovers. Cycling over the ridge of the mountain, the Rennsteig, is an experience. Eagles, grouse, lynxes and numerous other animals that are hardly found anywhere else in Europe still find a place to live here. Around the apartments, deer and numerous other animals come out of the stream to drink, and you will experience wildlife in its purest form. Gehlberg owes its name to the arnica flowers, which colored the mountain slopes yellow. Created in 1641 around a so-called glass hut, where glass was melted and formed. From two houses, a bakery, a brewery and a mill, a village slowly emerged. The glass factory has now become a museum. At an altitude of 982 meters, you are on the edge of Gehlberg on the highest mountain of the Thuringian Forest, the great Beerberg. But also slightly lower sisters and brothers such as Schneekopf, Teufelskreis, Sachsenstein and Bärenbachskopf, offer you new breathtaking views every time. So you are in Gehlberg with the right to a high level. Picnicking in the sun by a clear, rippling water and musing around a campfire after the sun has set, make a stay in the summer a sultry fairy tale. There are plenty of activities in the area to make a vacation a relaxing but unforgettable time, which you will always want to return to. Guest access In the surroundings of Gehlberg, there are a multitude of sights and attractions to visit. Some very close, others a little further away. There is something for everyone and for every season and all weather conditions. In the surroundings of Gehlberg, numerous hiking trails have been marked out. Some of them cross the Schneekopf (978 meters high, the second highest mountain in Thuringia), the most striking mountain of the Thuringian Forest, of volcanic origin, from which you have a breathtaking view. From the Schmücke, you can reach the top in about half an hour. With a mountain bike or hybrid bike, you can explore the Rennsteig. The Rennsteig is the 168-kilometer-long road that has run over the ridge of the Thuringian Mountains for centuries and was used as a postal road in earlier times. Along the Rennsteig there are many huts and (sometimes centuries-old) hotels, restaurants, postiljons, farms and other buildings where travelers can get food, drink and/or shelter. On the route, you will find numerous boundary stones and coats of arms, which marked who was in charge of the area. There were once more than 1,300 of them. Numerous routes have been marked out, and tours are organized regularly. Both light tours and strenuous routes where 2000 meters of altitude are climbed and descended in one day are among the possibilities. In the Swimming Paradise in Oberhof, under a giant glass dome, there are baths with water temperatures of 28 to 32 degrees. Whirlpools, sun lounger areas, a 100-meter giant water slide, whitewater channel, saunas, steam bath, cold water basin, solarium, outdoor pools, playgrounds and sunbathing areas complete the picture. Trusetal waterfall: Tambach-Dietharz is the mountain town with the largest Thürinnger free-standing climbing rock, the Falkenstein, with the largest natural waterfall, the Spitterfall, and Thuringia's only high mountain ridge, the Röllchen. You can also go rafting on the river Apfelstädt Schloss Friedenstein: The castle dominates the cityscape. The former ducal residence now houses several museums and the Ekhof Theater. Music and theater festivals are organized in the summer.
