Description
Climb to the Skydeck to take in the redwood hills and ocean horizon atop this one-of-a-kind local landmark! Welcome to the Skydeck House, a storybook home “built for fun” by an arts and crafts artisan from local, repurposed natural materials with traditional methods and modern conveniences. Dig in with a cozy woodburning stove and tall windows. Skydeck House is the perfect launchpad to your Humboldt adventures! Dog / Pet Friendly! The space Skydeck House is a perfect place for visitors to CalPoly Humboldt, hikers, surfers, daytrippers, beach bums, LGBTQ travelers, digital nomads, and dog owners to settle in or strike out and explore! Find that unique adventure at the local natural wonders and check out the local history of the area, and even of the house itself! The ZigZag Suite is named for the fun ZigZag brick hearth behind the woodburning stove, a design element that reflects the playful whimsy of the house! Here's some stuff we love to do around here: Clam Beach! (3.2 miles, 6 minutes) Mad River Beach! (9.3 miles, 17 minutes) Beau Pre Golf Club (1.2 miles, 3 minutes) Arcata Community Forest (9.7 miles, 13 minutes) Trinidad Head (9 miles, 12 minutes) Sequoia Park & Zoo (16.8 miles, 23 minutes) Cal Poly Humboldt (7.3 miles, 10 minutes) Arcata Plaza & Saturday Farmer's Market (7.8 miles, 13 minutes) Stuff we like to do: Kayaking! Horseback riding! Shopping for cool redwood burls and slabs! Avenue of the Giants - every single time and it never gets old! Lady Bird Johnson Grove! Coffee at Shotz in Rio Dell! (Everything there is good. Everything.) Swipe Right Cider from the Humboldt Cider Company in Eureka! Moonstone Crossing wine tasting in Trinidad! Spying on Elks at the Lagoons! Axe throwing! ...and of course, morning coffee on the SkyDeck! Wait, What Am I Looking At? Yeah, it’s kind of hard to get your mind around it. Visitors intuitively stare a bit, then inevitably walk 360 degrees around the perimeter to take it in. You'll probably spy someone passing by to stop and stare up! The logic of the place invites curiosity. The layout is intimate and could seem small if not for the mindful intention of the diminished proportions. This is balanced by plentiful and tall windows that make the outside (and the changing light throughout the day) feel like part of the rooms. The natural materials invite every surface to be touched and enjoyed. The rooflines can challenge the eye, and their natural movement inspires contemplation and makes the small footprint feel spacious. The playful chimneys give the home a sense of not taking itself too seriously (it doesn't). The vertical orientation, strange outdoor staircase, and prominent rooftop deck balance the comfort of the interiors by stretching residents a bit out of their comfort zones, displacing both eye body with new visual and spatial experiences. The house looks delightfully unique from itself from every angle and almost like it shouldn't be allowed. Ok, that’s poetic and all, but tell me about this place! There are three separate units in the house, each with its own external entrance: the first floor apartment, the second floor apartment, and the studio bedroom in the tower. We rent out all three units and as owners, frequently visit whichever one is open to stay in ourselves. Don't worry, we'll give you your privacy! Bet sure to climb to the Skydeck in the morning and take a photo of your shadow standing on top of the house as projected below! Guest access For this listing, guests will have the whole ground floor to themselves. All guests staying at the property may access the yard, the stairs, and of course the SkyDeck! There is plenty of on-street parking along this corner lot (the driveway is reserved for guests on the 2nd and 3rd Floors, while 1st Floor guests park on the street in front of the front door) Other things to note Park in front of the house on the street in front of the front door (Driveway parking is for guests on the Upper Floors only). There is ample street parking all along this generously sized corner lot! Extended stays are possible - please message regarding your per diem and desired dates! No TV, but There is excellent internet for steaming with your devices! Please supervise children and pets at all times around the staircases and SkyDeck. Lower floors may hear guest footsteps and voices from upper floors. Please note that if guests are afraid of heights, it may be best to stick to the ground floor accommodations!
