Description

RIVER ISIUKHU TENTED CAMP is situated on a sprawling rural farmland near Muraka Market along Kakamega- Kisumu highway which is 10 mins from Kakamega Town and easily accessed (500m) from the Kisumu Kakamega highway. Traversed by the great River Isiukhu, the camp is a unique and offers you a 3C package of indigenous Kenya and East African Cuisine, Culture and Climate. RITE also offers a safe and serene environment for camping, riversports, picnics, weddings, birthdays, meetings etc. Welcome All ! The space We have been inspired by the Nobel environmentalist, Wangari Maathai, to mold cuisine, culture, and climate (the 3C) into a sanctuary for you and others who are eager and fortunate to escape, even if momentarily, from the madding crowds and concrete forests of the cities of the world. Our location in the Isukha community of the Luyia peoples of Kenya is unique; for no other trinity embodies the mythical existence of the Isukha better than River Isiukhu, Kakamega Forest, and the Ikhonga Murwi - the crying stone. River isiukhu, whose waters are perpetually replenished by the ever-raining Kakamega forest, is the eternal lifeblood of the Isukha community, whose eternity is immortalized by the Ikhonga Murwi -the ever-weeping stone. For as long as the river flows, the stone continues to weep with joy, and the people are alive and solidified! The community is always striving to keep the Isiukhu, the unique tropical rain forest, and hence the Ikhonga Murwi, alive! What a lesson for modern Climate Change! The environment is secure, we are surrounded by neighbors who have lived here for generations on the tenets of duty of care for your neighbor. During the night, there are guards on watch. You will identify them by their reflective vests or occasional flashlights. They are advised to observe maximum silence and move around stealthily. 15. Animals and Birds on the Camp: There are some livestock and a variety of domesticated birds on the camp including swans and guinea fowl. Please do not feed birds and animals …you can be certain they are properly fed! The Swans may appear aggressive to strangers. If they approach, stand still and gesture in a friendly manner, or just keep walking slowly. If you try to run, they may try to scare you, aiming at your feet. Early in the morning or late in the evening, the guinea fowl, and cocks, as well as birds in the wild, might be a bit too chirpy, but that is the kind of village life we enjoy here as Isukha folk!!
