"Sharkey's Cottage", Coveside, Cadgwith
Description
The traditional home of local fisherman and character, Sharkey Stephens, "The King of Cadgwith", 1926-2017 A spacious traditional two-storey coastal Cornish cottage snug under its beautifully thatched roof - warm in winter, cool in summer and only four minutes stroll from the sea, (three from the excellent pub!) The space Come in through the teak front door; you have to your left a modern, equipped kitchen and six-seat dining area; to your right sheltered by the 16th century weatherboard is the parlour with ship's timbers over the hearth and a low-emission log burning stove. For computer work, there's a reclining chair alongside the occasional table with its high-speed wi-fi hub. Opposite the stairs is a door - mind your head! - to another "Snug" sitting room, with easy chairs and a sofa for comfortable television viewing. A further wood-burner will keep you cosy. Upstairs is a lovely spacious bathroom with a five foot bath and proper overhead shower. At opposite ends of the landing are the two double bedrooms with original doors and the 16th century windows from which Sharkey's wife could see his rakish 25 foot Crabber, the "Kingfisher" winched up safely on the fishing beach. Guest access The entire Cottage is there for your relaxation and enjoyment, with unmatched views from the outdoor dining terrace. If wind is forecast, please put the sun umbrella in for the night!! It's wonderful to sleep secure within the three-foot thick walls and wake to the sun streaming in. Open the front door and smell the sea air, and in spring, the gorse and the bluebells, as you step out onto the Coastal Footpath, for although you can park here at the side of the path, there is NO noisy traffic. A note about parking: my Ford Ecosport fits nicely, and is easy to reverse out, but if you have the good fortune to drive a modern giant SUV you may prefer to use the terraced public Car Park, for which I provide a free pass. Some vehicles have difficulty negotiating the Cove itself, as the lanes are steep, narrow and, impinged upon by Fishermen's gear and, vehicles. Cadgwith has, after all, the last authentic Working fIshing beach. Other things to note Some times on this peninsula the Wi-Fi is less than brilliant; However, the wonderful Cadgwith Inn three minutes away has Starlink installed and will allow you access. While you're there, peruse the menu; the food is great, the staff friendly, the fire warm, the craic far-ranging and amiable, and folk musicians and Shantymen (and women) love to congregate, usually tuesdays and Fridays. (In fact Friday's Cadgwith Singers are very famous. Table booking advised)
