As a historic 1909 home without the building wide fire sprinkler system that Nebraska requires before a bed and breakfast may serve hot food, we offer a thoughtfully prepared continental breakfast, which is one of the small ways we preserve the character of this landmark home. Historic beauty, modern comfort Built in 1909 for lumber magnate Frank M. Spalding and designed by architect Ferdinand Fiske, this Mission style estate is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It features a grand semicircular oak staircase with floating cantilevered steps, exquisite original woodwork, antiques and period furnishings, a sprawling front porch, and a formal dining room anchored by a massive built-in oak buffet. No two rooms look the same, and every one of them feels like home. A home made for events and celebrations The main floor is made for gathering. Host an intimate wedding or vow renewal, a family reunion, a corporate retreat or planning session, a bridal or baby shower, or a holiday dinner at Thanksgiving or Christmas. Celebrations are held on the first floor, with food and drinks enjoyed in our gracious common rooms, the dining room, reception room, den, enclosed patio, and front porch, so your day flows easily while the home stays comfortable for everyone staying overnight. A quick and friendly heads up on how events work here. The nightly rate covers your overnight stay, and gatherings carry a few additional charges, which depend on the rooms you use, the hours you need, and how many guests join who are not staying the night. These simply help us set up, care for the home and its historic details afterward, and give your event the attention it deserves. Any celebration with food or drink is arranged with our event planner, who helps bring the whole day together, and this is always the case for weddings. Please tell us at the time of booking if you plan to host an event of any kind, so we can prepare and give you the best experience. Events are held on the first floor, with food and beverages enjoyed in our common rooms other than the living room. So there are no surprises, please know that the nightly rate covers your overnight stay, and events carry additional charges beyond it, based on the spaces used, the hours involved, and the number of guests attending who are not staying overnight. Any event with food or drink is coordinated with our event planner, and weddings are always planned together with them. Just message us and we will walk you through the full pricing before you book. Please also note that Martha's may adjust room and whole-house pricing, or apply a two night minimum, within two weeks of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Athletic Department announcing the date of a home football game. Any guest who booked before such a price adjustment may cancel with a full refund, regardless of the booking's cancellation terms.
