Borthwick Farm Cottage Annex

The Annex front door opens out onto the stunning Borthwick castle - often with a field full of sheep. This is a lovely area for walkers, hikers or anyone seeking peace and quiet in a tranquil environment or a romantic weekend getaway nestled below a remote historic castle. The hamlet is also only 30min drive (or 20min train) into central Edinburgh- perfect balance of city to green countryside. Please note we cannot accommodate children or pets. The space In the heart of the Midlothian valley of rolling green hills, views of the Pentland Hills and close to Edinburgh, Borthwick is a magical little spot. We are offering a wee (approx 22 sq m), self-catering, main entrance annex, attached to our 366 year old cottage. Suitable for a couple or an individual looking for a countryside escape. Our cottage annex directly overlooks Borthwick Castle (which is a stones throw away), has a well equipped kitchen with coffee bar, cosy double bedroom with views up to the church, bathroom with a large walk-in shower and a small store room with a washing machine. Gorebridge, 5 min drive, has shops, restaurants and a post-office. It also has free parking & a direct 20-min train into Edinburgh Waverley- v handy! There are some local takeaways/eateries here. We are 20min drive from the historic Rosslyn chapel, and 10 mins drive (or a spectacular 2 hour hike) from the beautiful Crichton Castle. There are dense woodland and river walks around us, including the famous Gore Glen and Curry woods, and we are surrounded by wildlife. Most days you can see red deer in the fields, kestrels and buzzards. If you are lucky enough, you may spot a badger or our local barn owl! Please note, we have cats and dogs living in the main cottage. They will not have access to the annex. Our cat Alvin may welcome you at the front of the annex on occasion, but please don’t let him inside no matter how much he protests. We are slowly but surely renovating the entire cottage, outhouse & stable block ourselves, fully DIY, it has been empty for a significant number of years so this is a huge undertaking - we are trying hard to restore it to its former glory! That in mind, our drive way isn’t looking too beautiful & our stables/outbuildings are also currently being renovated. Guest access The annex of the cottage is all yours. Front door main entrance & keys are kept in the lock box, with self check-in. Other things to note This whole area is working farm land, there can be livestock on the roads and plenty of horse riders, so drive with care coming into the Hamlet. Please also note this is not suitable for a family or for children. This is for an individual or a couple. We keep this area of the cottage pet free incase of allergies. But as stated, animals live in the main house. Please also remember, this is our home, we are not a 5 star hotel, we also live here. We are renovating the entire site, so you will see us I’m sure, either pottering with DIY on one of the outhouses, walking the dogs or feeding the horses. Come & have a chat :-)
