All routes converge in Why, AZ: From Phoenix: -Take I10 to exit onto Rt. 347 towards Maricopa -Exit onto Rt. 238 towards Gila Bend -Once in Gila Bend, look for the McDonalds on your right. Immediately prior to the restaurant, take the exit onto Rt. 85 with a sign marked “Mexico”. -Continue on 85 through Ajo, enroute to Why, AZ. Once you arrive in Why, there is a Texaco station and the Why Not Travel Store. This is a great place to top off your fuel, restroom break, and either grab a snack/go to the restaurant. From Tucson: -Travel west on Rt. 86 towards Why, AZ. This road intersects with 85 right in front of the Why Not Travel Store. On 85. Once you depart Why: -Continue to head South on 85 for the border. -When you reach Lukeville, AZ, the border town, you’ll find on the American side a fueling station, grocery store, restaurant, and bathroom facilities. -When you’re ready to cross into Mexico, wait your turn and pull into one of the two lanes. If you receive a green inspection light, you are free to proceed through. If you receive a red light, you’ll be waved over to a holding spot. Be polite as they ask questions. please cooperate if they ask to look inside your vehicle. They are searching for drugs, firearms, and ammunition, which, of course, you won’t have! -Once you pass through the border, be very careful with your speed. The WHOLE time you are driving through the border town of Sonoyta, you should travel no more than 40kph (25mph)!!! Follow signs to Puerto Penasco through town. -Once in the town’s outskirts, you will follow this through mostly open range desert For approximately 56 miles. The first landmark you need to watch for is the overpass at the Caborca turn-off. Just before you reach the overpass, exit right, go around the round-a-bout, then under the overpass to exit. From this point on, please refer to the attached map. -Follow this road for 7.2miles until you reach the railroad tracks. Once you cross over the tracks take the very first right turn. -Travel on this road for 1 mile. On your left you will see the new gate house for the Encantame Towers. DO NOT turn here. Instead, take the immediate left turn right after this onto the dirt road. -Travel on this dirt road for 5 miles. Watch for the 2 tight right-hand turns, especially the second one. You will then be presented with a fork in the road; take the one to the left Up the hill. -From here you will have a 2.2 mile ride to the house. There are 2 guard gates, the first occurring fairly quickly. Drive slowly-there are a few potholes in the dirt road they may jar your teeth if encountered. -Once through the second guard gate, take your second left. Captain’s Quarters is straight in front of you with the metal gate Leading into the driveway.
