Guest access According to Greek mythology, Giantas Sarantapichos, who was the son of the father of the Gods Zeus, once overwhelmed to sip water from the Crystal or Myrtos River near Ierapetra. The longest of the beard tossed the two mountain rock, which created the imposing Sarakina Gorge. Sarakina is situated a few meters outside and north of the village of Mythi in the province of Ierapetra and just a stone's throw from the seaside village of Myrtos, where are the estuaries of Kryopotamos that sprays the canyon. The name of the canyon comes from the Sarakinou and it is the place we find in many places in Crete. It is considered by many to be the most beautiful walking canyon in Crete and they are probably not wrong. The length of the canyon is just one and a half kilometers but within this short route the visitor will encounter an incredible wonder of Cretan nature, a sculpture that created the water in the millions of years that erodes the rock with its passage. Sarakina has spectacular walls that are found mostly in technical canyons, which are gorges they have in their bed steep downloads, and can only be scattered with the use of special equipment. The width ranges from 3-10 meters and because the slope on the walls is in many places negative it closes from above not letting the light into some places. The walls are of unique beauty and sharply reaching 150 meters vertical height. Other things to note The gorge of Havga is very close to the village of Kalamafka, about 12 km from the city of Ierapetra. With the same name or corruption there are other canyons in Eastern Crete, such as the canyons of Havgas in the Lassithi Plateau, Kavousi or Plaka. Havgas of Kalamafka is formed between the Megali Peak (1103m) and Kokies (993m) and the stream that flows it, known as the Kapsi stream, is the main feeder of the Kalamakian River that flows into the Stomio of Gra Lygia. The canyon is especially beautiful and with beautiful waterfalls in the winter, which have water until the end of spring. In many places, the rocks host “visual” creations of nature that wind and water carved over time. It is relatively short in length and the hike inside its riverbed is very easy, even for beginners. The area's altitude is about 500m, favoring the development of a beautiful pine forest. Unfortunately, the canyon and the surrounding area has been burned several times by fires, causing the pine forest to shrink. Still, it's worth a visit and you'll definitely be impressed by the small pine trees that spring up among the rocks. The depth of the canyon in some places reaches 300m. At one point two schist rocks form an entrance of successive caves, which were used as a hiding place in the German occupation by the Cretan rebels and allies. The area has been called “Chinese Landscape” because of the meteors with the bonsai-like pine trees. Near the gorge you can visit the village of Kalamafka with its taverns and running waters. Also nearby there is an ancient olive press but also the churches of Agios Ioannis and Agios Antonios. The island of Crete is a Greek gem that sails in the turquoise sea. The beaches are divine lands with golden sand and rounded pebbles. No one can ignore the historical and mythological value of this island. Visit one of the many archaeological and historical sites of the island to take a break from sunbathing and in awe.» Registration Details 00003568197
