This quaint historical town was settled by hundreds of pioneers during the Depression of the 1930's. It retains much of its early charm and the downtown park is bustling with family-friendly activities throughout the summer. The Palmer Museum, situated along the park, is teaming with the lure of days gone by and staffed by friendly, knowledgeable attendants who guide visitors from near and far on current events. Palmer's local airport is home to scores of flight-seeing services HATCHER PASS is a breathtaking 30-minute drive away. Home to the now- closed Independence Mine, a once bustling gold mine, the remnants of which provide a great backdrop for photographers, painters and the curious, Hatcher Pass is a splendorous public park where hiking, skiing and spectacular valley views can be enjoyed by all who take the drive. Visitors can wander along the gold camp buildings, a bunkhouse, the train tracks which exit the mine and fall off into ruin (a sight to see,) and hike the trail to a still active mine. Hatcher Pass is a must see! REFLECTIONS LAKE. A 10-minute drive away and situated alongside the convergence of two rivers, Reflections Lake offers an easy walking trail year-round. Come with snowshoes, skis, or ice skates during the winter months, or identify wildflowers and forest birds in summer. MUSK OX FARM. A 15 -minute drive away and home to the local Musk Ox herd. Pet and interact with this unique, age-old, beautiful animal! WASILLA is a 10-minute drive away. Wasilla is home to the local Alaska Railroad Depot, the Dorothy G Page Museum, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Museum, and most of the local box stores which are bustling with people from near and far. DENALI NATIONAL PARK is a 3-hour drive away and surely well worth a lifetime of storytelling and memories. Visitors can also take the scenic train ride to the park and back, but that is a multi-day journey.
