Cain Lake is a short drive, with a boat launch for kayaks and canoes and good fishing off the bank most mornings. Bellingham and Mount Vernon both are drivable in about twenty-five minutes, close enough for a day of shopping, sightseeing or dinner downtown without cutting into your enjoyment at the house. The kitchen has stainless appliances, a big dining table, and counter space for several people to cook at once. Late summer here means Chuckanut Drive with the windows down. Farm stands stay stocked into September. The Sunday Market in Alger runs through the season if you want to spend an hour talking with locals. Galbraith Mountain's trail network is fifteen minutes away for anyone who rides, and Mt. Baker's alpine trails are open through early fall before the snow comes back.
