Description

Kalamoti is one of the medieval "Mastica" villages in the southern part of Chios. It is small, quiet and friendly, and has everything you need (small supermarkets, cafes and tavernas), and is close to one of the best beaches in Chios. The house is restored according to the old plans, spacious and rustic. Balcony and roof terrace add space. Fully equiped kitchen (gass oven top) and microwave, toaster, large dining table. Floor fans. The care taker is Tania. She will be next door in daytime. The space This house is in the village of Kalamoti. This is a small medieval village located in the southern part of Chios, an island east of Athens. The island is not a touristic island (like a lot of the other more well-known places in Greece) and therefore is mostly traditional and unspoiled. The village has all you need, including fresh bread every morning! It is close (4 km) to a fantasic beach (Komi) and easy to reach from Athens, Thessaloniki, other Greek islands and Cesme in Turkey. Because Kalamoti is a medieval village, the streets inside are narrow and only one street leads through the village. This is therefore a very quiet place with no traffic. 800 people live in and around the village and you will probably be one of the few visitors. You will have problems buying postcards, at least a recent one! If you have kids you can just let them out to play - they will not get lost! The house was built in 1381 and renovated from 1997. It served as the owner's private residence until recently. It is very “rustic” but very comfortable with stone floors, and the original walls, ceilings and door frames have been restored. On the first floor, you will find a big kitchen/dining, a lounge has a wood oven and access to the balcony, bathroom and one bedroom with a queen-size bed. Two staircases lead up to the terrace on the roof, one next to a mezzanine (; sleeping loft that can be arranged as extra beds for kids). Downstairs there is the entrance hall, one bedroom with two single beds. Access to this bedroom is through another spacious room that has a fireplace. This room usually has one single bed (but another bed can be fitted in if needed). There is also a small bathroom on the ground floor. The downstairs is cool on hot summer nights. All houses in Kalamoti are built with small “openings” as they say. WHERE TO SHOP There is a Mini Market just 200 meters up from the houses. The owner speaks English. He has most of the things you need. There is also a small Mini Market at the Inner and the Outer square. At Outer Square, you will also find the bus stop, the post office, police, and a cash machine. WHERE TO EAT There is one taverna in Kalamoti, in addition, there is also a grill in the Outer Square, which serves steaks, gyro (pita with filling), souvlaki, etc. There are cafes at the Inner and Outer Square. Of course, there are many cafes and tavernas in the local villages and we can recommend a visit to Armolia, Vessa, Pirgi, Olympi and Mesta. The closest beach is Komi. Here you will find three tavernas (open from April to October) which serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner (the Greeks eat late). There is also has a handful of cafes and bars. Komi is nice all day, but it is especially nice to go down there around 6 pm – have a swim and afterward have a drink or something to eat. At that time it's usually quiet, and you can watch the sunset. In the summer there are buses from Kalamoti (at noon) to Komi with the return at 4 pm. THINGS TO SEE Chios has a long but also tragic history. Here we will mention places like Pyrgi, Mesta, Emporios, Nea Moni (closes Mondays) and Anavatos. Chios is also a good place if you want to take long walks in the lowlands as well as in the mountains. In the neighboring village, Armolia, you find potteries known all over Greece. You can even ask them to make something unique for you. There is also a medieval castle on the hill above Armolia, which is a comfortable walk. The newly opened Chios Mastic Museum near Pyrgi is fantastic! Open every day except Tuesdays. More detailed information will be forwarded if you wish to book, and there is also an information folder in the house. You will be met by the caretaker who can give more information if needed. If the house is unavailable on certain dates we may have the possibility to book you into our second and smaller house. Just send a request. Guest access The guests will have access to the whole house except the laundry which is operated by the caretaker. Just tell her when you need to use it. We charge 8 EURO extra for an 8-kilo load. If needed, she will also supply wood for a minor fee (EURO 5). If an electric heater is needed, we charge (EURO 5). The house has wi-fi. Due to the thick stone walls, the mobile reception is best on the balcony and the terrace. Other things to note The water in Kalamoti is drinkable, but sometimes it has a salty taste. You can of course buy water, but there are water taps around the village were you get well water for free. Registration Details 00000130674
