Cottage in Newport
Description
Starry skies from the covered decks, morning hikes to fantastic vistas and babbling springs, foraging for cress, berries or chinquapins, cooking in the well-provisioned kitchen & eating inside on formal dinnerware or al fresco on casual china. Living/dining area w/gas log fireplace & a queen sofabed (room has a door to close off for privacy.) Attractive, solid antique furnishings throughout. Charmingly renovated, accessible bathroom. Wood stove in family room. 30 min to VT, 10 min to the AT. The space The magic of this land never ceases to amaze visitors. Whether walking the high pastures or slipping into the cool forest, you'll experience a sense of well-being and one-ness with the natural world. You'll probably meet some resident wildlife, such as whitetail deer, wild turkey, rabbits, and hawks, and you may catch sight of a black bear, or hear a coyote calling up the mountain. Most months of the year there's a herd of Angus cattle grazing the fields and blazing trails. Numerous springs emerge and flow through the hollows, cold and clear. Geology is unveiled in rocky ledges, water-carved stones, and colorful chunks of flint. Wild flowering and fruiting plants abound--take a basket and harvest seasonal berries while you hike! If you enjoy running, there's a loop trail of a little over a mile. Unlike the hikers on the Appalachian Trail (which, btw, crests the mountain overlooking the farm) you won't be roughing it when it comes time to prepare your meals and enjoy a good night's sleep. The cottage is very well appointed and comfortable. Mountain breezes take care of cooling, and there's a cozy wood stove and a gas log fireplace for chilly nights. Our family loves coming up here, and we leave a variety of helpful items on site to help you enjoy your stay-- binoculars, extra jackets, lanterns, picnic blankets, games and more. NOTE-- This is a cattle grazing farm! You'll be driving about 1/3 mile up a gravel-and dirt driveway to the cottage. In wet or winter conditions, 4WD or AWD highly recommended. Cows roam freely, but the "yard" is well-secured from them, with no cow pies :-) Also note that most cellular networks work up here, but Verizon service does not. Guest access The 830 sf main floor, decks, yard, and 200+ acres! Other things to note Although the driveway is is dirt and gravel, it is groomed enough for most makes/models of cars and certainly trucks. It can be slick in wet or wintery weather-- best to have AWD or 4WD in these conditions.
