Please note that tides change quickly and can wash away toys, boards or shoes….bring everything up onto the bulkhead when not in use. Please note that winter can be rough around here and kayaking or water activities are not always possible, especially in the winter. Same goes with power, we cannot guaranteed you will have power 24/7 during your stay. However, power company always work very hard to restore power as quickly as they can. This is a quiet community and we ask that there not be big loud parties or events held in this house, and no camping or pets please. As amazing as this property is, so is the island of Vashon. It is a peaceful tranquil oasis in south Puget Sound just a short ferry ride from Seattle, Tacoma and the Olympic Peninsula. The Fauntleroy ferry in West Seattle and Southworth Ferry on the peninsula come in on the north end of the island. The Tacoma/ Point Defiance ferry lands in Tahlequah at the south end of the island. It is the largest island in Puget Sound south of the Admiralty Inlet, and only has a population of 11,000 people. It is 14 miles long from north to South. Quartermaster Harbor is a marine recovery area located between Vashon and Maury Island. The harbor itself is warmer than the rest of Puget Sound, so although it is cold you can easily swim, float and paddle board in the summer. It is a great place for bird watching. There is a bald eagle that lives near by and visits often, making swooping flights overhead. Due to the high concentration of shellfish and foraging fish in the harbor it is a major wintering area for 35 species of birds. 3000 individual birds winter here annually. Please note: While staying here, you might be encounter neighbors' dogs or pets, or other animals (deer, eagles, rabbits, ants, etc...) Because you are out in nature and there is no way for us to avoid from running into animals, creatures. No compensation will be provided for these instances. On the east side of Vashon Island is Maury Island, which is connected to Vashon Island through an isthmus (a narrow strip of land). The isthmus was built by residents in 1913. Prior to that time, Maury Island was only connected to Vashon Island periodically during low tide. Vashon island is also referred to as the Vashon-Maury island. Our cabin is on the SW corner of the Maury Island. It is around 20 minutes to Vashon Island downtown and shop, 30 mins to Fauntleroy Ferry and around 15-20 minutes to Tahlequah ferry The Fauntleroy to Vashon Island ferry leaves West Seattle a few times an hour and more frequently during peak commute times. You can check the Washington Ferry schedule website for time tables. The ferry ride is about 18 minutes each direction and you only pay going to Vashon and the return trip is free. You can drive a vehicle on the ferry or walk-on. During the summer on weekdays only you can take the Water Taxi directly to Downtown Seattle that lets you off in the Pioneer Square neighborhood. Hours are limited so be sure to check the schedule. Vashon is great for a relaxed week. It’s authentic and beautiful, and is a laid back slide of life that feels like a bygone era in the PNW. Things to do: Point Robinson Lighthouse, Maury Island Park (go to the high point and then down to the beach by the old quarry), Dockton Park, Dockton Park mountain bike trails (if you ride, they’re fun), ferry to Seattle for a day trip, ferry to Tacoma and walk to Point Defiance Zoo. Food: Snapdragon (best sticky buns ever), May Kitchen (tried the fried watercress), The Rock Pizza, cider Festival (if timing is right), farmers markets, groceries at thiftway, beers from the brewery. Guest access Guests can access to whole house except for the small shed in the yard, the loft above the bedroom by the kitchen, and the closet upstairs where we store cleaners’ supplies. The loft with the pull out couch in blue is available for guests. There are 3 street parkings. We ask you to limit 3 cars only for guests Area on the right side of the yard where the old firepit used to be, is not available for guests to use (not a safe area for kids so please keep them off).
