Description
ABOUT TIME LODGE is a natural tranquil paradise right on the beach & only 40 mins from the airport. 'Folonko' is a double room - half of a traditional African roundhouse, with an ensuite bathroom and solar generated electricity. The sea view restaurant includes vegan options. See turtles, ospreys, flamingos, monkeys, bush babies & mongoose. About Time is a quiet off-grid affair allowing you to feel the jungle and ocean around you. Simple but comfortable - African style. The space About Time is a partnership between British veterinary surgeon & conservationist Dr Iain McGill & the Bah Family from Gambia. Our Manager is Kitabu, and he can fix anything for you. We have a beach bar, sea view restaurant surfing, a tiny library and more. We have acres of land with a huge Cashew tree that people tend to chill under, as well as many trees including fig, banana, palms, coconut, orange and lime - as well as many species which local herbalists and magic-men use. Kartong is a world renowned bird-watching site and we can organise bird watching and river safaris, as well as trips to Senegal by sea or the river Hallahin. For longer safaris we can escort you on nature safaris up-river to see chimpanzees, hippos, crocodiles, baboons, monkeys and mysterious ancient standing stones, as well as bringing you back down-river in the luxurious African Queen boat. We aim to protect and conserve the beautiful nature and wildlife here and so any animal (except a mosquito) arriving at About Time is protected - for it's also a wildlife sanctuary. The Bah family's representative on the ground is Salifu, who is a mine of information on the local area and manages the grounds here. About Time employs skilled craftsmen, carpenters, masons and chefs, as well as local staff for whom we provide on the job training and education. We are off-grid and source food locally and organically where we can. We build and craft from local materials, and recycle as much of what we use or find as we can. About Time is quiet, tranquil and beautiful, so please be respectful of others with whom you share our space: there are only 9 double rooms currently, each with their outside verandah. We generate all our own solar electricity, which runs 24 hours a day! Other things to note To get the most out of your trip, here's our Top Ten: 1. head torch: this will help you see the eye shine of the bush babies and other animals at night 2. suntan lotion 3. hat 4. flip flops: to be worn in the room 5. sturdier sandals/flip flops for outside the room 6. walking boots for exploring: there are snakes in Africa! 7. anti malarial meds; you probably won't see a single mosquito with us, as we are on the coast, but use mosquito repellant inland. I use Doxycycline 100mg once daily, which is available in the local pharmacy, but get advice from your Doctor before you travel, as things may change. 8. long sleeved shirt or zip top for the eves as it's around 18°C then, but 33°C by day! 9. binoculars! 10. mosquito repellant
