Other things to note My husband Andrew and I have been married 26 years. Back when we were dating, he told me that his dream was to one day have a place on the water. Who could argue with that? Then, work, kids and life got in the way as they do for most of us, and lofty dreams were set aside. As the years passed, we looked at a few lake houses and beach houses, but we didn’t jump. It felt too indulgent and impractical. That changed after I was diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening illness in 2020 which gave me a clearer perspective on just about every aspect of my life. I didn’t have a “bucket list,” but was compelled to take action when I saw this beautiful A-frame home for sale on Zillow... on a private lake in southern Illinois, a 90 minute drive from St. Louis. My husband was just launching a new company and it would have been too stressful for him to fly out with me to see it, but he gave me his blessing to take a look at the property. He trusted my judgment and we ended up making an offer without him even seeing it in person. This lake house is our special sanctuary for the soul, our house of light and joy, our dream realized of a “Place on the Water.” While we could love it all to ourselves, it didn’t quite make sense to do so since our two children have not yet both flown the coop and we wouldn’t be able to go as often as we may want to.
