Description

If you would like to sample the charming delights of Ulverston, take in the sights of the Furness Peninsula or simply need a handy base for your Lakeland adventures then our cottage in the South Lakes is the ideal location for your next sightseeing break. Located in Ulverston, Dragley Beck has good road and public transport links with free roadside parking. The town centre is also only a ten minute walk away. Long-term residential or professional stays are also welcome with discounted rates. The space Having just completed an extensive renovation (mid 22) that has tastefully retained traditional oak and stone features, our cottage provides a good standard of accommodation with a contemporary but traditional feel. Step inside beneath the quirky 'oak-framed' porch into an open plan living area paved with (under-heated) slate flooring that is welcoming when returning from trips in all weathers. The comfortable lounge area with leather suite and a Smart TV also has a log burner set into a traditional stone inglenook to ‘cosy up to' on those cooler evenings. Logs can be purchased at discounted rates although a complimentary ‘starter pack’ is provided with all stays from October to April. The fully fitted kitchen finished with quartz worktops provides a good range of essential appliances including dishwasher, microwave and electric cooker/hob. Any dirty laundry can be taken to one of several laundrettes only 5 minutes away if necessary (although the plan is to install a washer dryer in the coming months). Dining can be seated around the breakfast bar or less formally sat around the lounge area with the mood lighting adjusted to suit any occasion. A contemporary glazed panel staircase leads you up to the first floor where a comfortable double bedroom has a bright southerly outlook. To the rear is a single bedroom with views of Hoad Hill and the John Barrow monument. The cottage provides comfortable accommodation for the enjoyment of a small family of 3 or 4 persons. However, additional space can be made available if required at a small premium. Bedding can be made available for a fourth guest on the large comfortable sofa in the lounge. However, many guests opt for the additional bedroom space on the second floor that is made available only by the selection of a 5th guest requirement. This bright and cosy spacious area provides a further double bed with TV and makes an ideal space for reading, listening to music or simply a refuge for teenage children to 'hang out' after an active day's adventures. It should be noted however, that the access to this space is up a set of cabin steps and is unsuitable for small children or less able-bodied persons. Bathroom facilities are provided in a fully-tiled shower room on the first floor equipped with a large 'walk-in' rainfall shower, towel warmer and cosy underfloor heating. A single well behaved small to medium sized pet is also welcome at the cottage but please see rules. Externally to the rear is a shared (ungated) yard accessible through a 'stable door' - which is particularly useful to contain young children or pets whilst letting the fresh air and sunlight flow in. To the front of the property is a private bench where our guests can relax in the sunshine, catch their breath and watch the world go by (weather permitting of course). Guest access A standard booking for up to 3 guests will gain access to the first two levels of the cottage including 1 double and 1 single bedroom. The additional loft double bedroom is made available when 5 persons are booked into the cottage. If 3 separate beds are required for 3 single guests then the booking will need to reflect 5 persons to ensure that the 3rd bedroom is serviced and available. (Please note loft access is not suitable for all abilities). A one night stay ( where applicable) might incur a supplement to reflect changeover costs. Please contact the host for discounted rates on longer stays requiring the third bedroom. Other things to note Free parking is available on the roadside providing easy access to the cottage. Bus stops in both directions are within 50 metres and the train station at 2/3 mile is also within walking distance. Dragley Beck has a good range of amenities including a leisure centre (150m) traditional pub with good food and Sky Sports (200m) award winning fish & chip takeaway (250m), well stocked Co-op (300m) and swimming pool (400m). Further amenities are available towards the town centre only 10 minutes walk away. Ulverston is a traditional market town with cobbled streets, cosy pubs, an assortment of independent shops and hosts no less than 30 festivals and events throughout the year. It is also the birthplace of Stan Laurel and Naval explorer Sir John Barrow with museums and monuments in the town dedicated to both . Other notable local attractions include the world famous Manjushri Buddhist Centre (2miles) which holds a two week festival each summer and Ulverston Golf Course - one of the most stunning yet challenging parkland courses in the North of England (also 2 miles). Ulverston's history dates before the Domesday Book and was granted a Market Charter in 1280 by Edward I (Longshanks) allowing for a market on Thursdays and public houses to open from 10:30 am to 11:00 pm, regardless of any other statute. Today market days continue on Thursdays and Saturdays and include summer craft stalls, charity stalls and locally produced ware on "Made in Cumbria" stalls. Venturing a short distance further you can find several beaches (from 3 miles ) , the South Lakes Wild Animal Park (4miles) , Lakeland Motor Museum (6 miles) and Barrow Maritime & Dock Museum (10m) to name but a few. A short car journey to the north will also immerse you into the heart of the Lake District with its breathtaking scenery and endless list of further attractions. Being on the Ulverston outskirts and on the coastal route, Dragley Beck is also the ideal base for several scenic local walks often with good pubs along the route. Try for example a four mile scenic walk to and around Ulverston's historical canal renowned for being the shortest, widest and deepest canal in the world, capped with a bar meal at the halfway point, looking out across Morecambe bay. Please ask the host for any further details.
