Description

If you are looking for a traditional Cumbrian 'getaway' with good access to the Furness Peninsula, The Lakes and only yards from the centre of Ulverston then our tastefully renovated cottage is the ideal base for your next sightseeing break. With its traditional Lakeland features, private south-facing garden, excellent views and free doorstep parking then Duck Cottage has all you need. Long term residential and professional stays are also welcome with good discounts available to suit duration. The space Having recently completed an extensive renovation that has tastefully retained traditional oak and stone features, Duck Cottage provides a good standard of accommodation with a contemporary but traditional feel. Step inside beneath the quirky 'oak-framed' porch into an open plan living space paved with (under-heated) slate flooring that is welcoming when returning from trips in all weathers. The comfortable lounge area with large leather sofa and 50 inch Smart TV also has direct access to a small private south facing garden with views across Ulverston and Morecambe bay. The fitted kitchen finished with quartz worktops includes microwave, fridge, oven and electric cooker/hob. Dining can be seated around the breakfast bar or less formally sat around the lounge area. When its fine and sunny, you also have the option to push open those French doors and extend your living space onto the new furnished decking area (May 23) and just 'chill out' whilst admiring the views. A staircase leads upstairs to a double bedroom with fantastic views across Morecambe bay to the south. There is also a comfortable single bedroom at the rear. Bathroom facilities are provided within a fully-tiled shower room equipped with a spacious rainfall shower cubicle. Furry Friends are welcome, but pets are restricted to one medium sized dog kept on the ground floor / garden area only. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The town centre is only a few hundred yards away with its traditional market stalls, cobbled streets, and assortment of independent shops. There is also a diverse range of restaurants, cafes and cosy pubs - some providing live music. Ulverston's history dates back before the Domesday Book and the town was granted a Market Charter in 1280 by Edward I (Longshanks) allowing for a market on Thursdays and public houses to open for 12 hours a day - regardless of any other statute! These days, markets continue on Thursdays and Saturdays including summer craft stalls, charity stalls and 'made in Cumbria' stalls with local produce. Ulverston is also renowned as a ‘festival town’ hosting no less than 30 events for all tastes throughout the year. The town is also the birthplace of entertainer Stan Laurel and Naval explorer Sir John Barrow with museums and monuments dedicated to both. Other notable attractions include the world famous Manjushri Buddhist Centre (3 miles) which holds a two-week festival each summer and Ulverston Golf Course - one of the most stunning yet challenging parkland courses in the North of England (also at 3 miles). Venturing a short distance further you will find several beaches (from 4 miles ), the South Lakes Wild Animal Park (4miles), Lakeland Motor Museum (6 miles) and Barrow Maritime & Dock Museum (10miles) to name but a few. If the weather is fine and you would like a traditional Furness day out then why not take a drive along the coast road south taking in the views across Morecambe Bay and maybe stop off for an ice cream at one of the many beaches along the roadside. At the end of the peninsula you can drive along the causeway to Roa Island where there is a large lifeboat station and the possibility of taking a short ferry trip (please check times) across to Piel Island - a haven for local sailors and fishermen. Here you could have a walk around the ruins of its 14th century castle or just relax with a drink at the Ship Inn watching the 'boaters' go about their business or maybe even get a selfie with the Island's very own 'King of Piel'. You could venture through the country lanes on your return trip and maybe visit Furness Abbey (ruin), Gleaston Water Mill, Barrow Maritime Museum, or the Wild Animal Park at Dalton - all within a 10 mile radius. A short car journey north will also immerse you into the heart of the Lake District with its breathtaking scenery and endless supply of further attractions. Duck Cottage is also an ideal base for scenic local walks of any length whether it's a simple stroll up Gill Banks or a 70-mile hike along the Cumbria Way that starts just yards from the cottage. Try for example, a five-mile scenic stroll taking in the views from Sir John Barrow Monument, then down along Ulverston's famous historical canal towards the sea, perhaps with a lunch break at the ‘Bay Horse Inn' looking out across Morecambe bay. Walk your meal off with a short beach stroll, then head back towards town along the 18th century 'rope-walks' of Dragley Beck that were created to serve Ulverstons shipbuilding industry. Finish your trek off taking in the vibrant atmosphere of the old town centre and perhaps a nice cool refreshment sat outside one of the many friendly pubs. Please ask your host for any further details.
