The house is located in a rural area, nestled among green hills and the blue of the Cantabrian Sea. An ideal place to feel nature near Lekeitio, walking along the Lea River, crossing the marsh, going up Mount Lumentza, the lookout, Mount Otoio, and when the tide is low, accessing the island of San Nicolas or Garraitz, located opposite the beach, enjoying the magnificent views offered by this limestone cliff—perfect spots to enjoy unforgettable sunrises and sunsets. We can also visit the Santa Katalina lighthouse, the only one open to visitors in Euskadi. One kilometer from the house is the multi-adventure park, where we can choose between various circuits with different challenges and zip lines. At 2 km we can practice water sports such as surfing, sailing, canoeing, diving, and SUP. The house is located on a small lookout, in the rural Basque municipality of Mendexa, on the Cantabrian coast. Municipality of Mendexa Mendexa is a municipality situated on a hill, surrounded by sea and mountains, offering visitors the traditional architecture of the farmhouses as well as a beautiful view of the coast. If we go down to sea level, in the marsh, we can visit the Marierrota mill, which is located within a protected ecosystem and declared a Site of Community Interest. Mendexa's beach is called Karraspio and is situated opposite the island of San Nicolás or Garraitz, a limestone cliff that can be reached at low tide, either through the sand or over the breakwater, and from the top you can enjoy beautiful views of Lekeitio and the beaches of Karraspio (Mendexa) and Isuntza (Lekeitio). The Lea river separates the municipalities of Lekeitio and Mendexa. Municipality of Lekeitio The town of Lekeitio (it's 2 km from our house) is a fishing village located between Bilbao and San Sebastián, about an hour's drive from both cities and the airport. In the 19th century, several aristocrats visited the municipality, including Queen Isabel II and the Austro-Hungarian Empress Zita. Lekeitio is a perfect place to stroll along the harbor and its narrow cobbled streets in the old town or take a walk to the Santa Catalina lighthouse, the only lighthouse in the Basque Country that you can visit. Among its notable buildings are: Basilica of the Assumption of Santa María: dating from the 15th century, it is a late Gothic construction. Inside, we find an excellent Gothic-Flamenco altarpiece, the third largest Gothic carved altarpiece in the entire Peninsula. The church of the Santo Domingo convent (1535). The Uriarte Palace from the 17th century. The Town Hall from the 18th century. Turpin Tower from the 16th century. And the Abaroa Palace: in late Neo-Baroque style from the 19th century. Festivals San Pedros: Celebrated between June 29 and July 1. San Antolines: Celebrated between September 1 and 8. Notable for its age and uniqueness is the Festival of the Geese, which is usually held on September 5. From Lekeitio, we can take different routes to visit interesting places. To the west, we could take the Bizkaina coast route and even reach Cantabria. Heading towards Gernika, we find towns like Ispaster, with its beautiful Ogella cove, just a few kilometers from Lekeitio, where the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve begins. Following the route, we come across Ea, a small village with its estuary, little bridges, and tiny beach and harbor. The next town is Elantxobe, built on the cliffs, then Ibarrangelua, home to Laga beach, and at the mouth of the Mundaka estuary is Laida beach. Continuing the route, we reach Gernika, a town where we can visit the Assembly House, the Gernika Tree, the Peace Museum, and where every Monday the market is held, a tradition that has been celebrated weekly for over 650 years. Continuing along the route, we would pass through Mundaka, Bermeo, reach the San Juan de Gaztelugatxe peninsula, pass through Bakio, Gorliz, Plentzia, Sopelana, Getxo, Portugalete, and finish the route in Bilbao. On the East coast, we have the Gipuzkoan coast, where we can visit Ondarroa, Mutriku, Deba, Zumaia, Getaria, Zarautz, Orio, and San Sebastian, and even go as far as the south of France. In the interior of the region, we can visit charming little towns like Amoroto, Gizaburuaga, Aulesti, or Munitibar. From Munitibar, heading towards Markina, we have the chance to visit the collegiate church of Zenarruza (Bolibar), an ancient abbey dating back to the 11th century and an important spot on the original coastal Camino de Santiago route. In the same municipality is the Simón Bolivar museum, which houses collections that shed light on the lives of the Biscayans in the Middle Ages and on the personal and political journey of Simón Bolivar, the "liberator" of several American nations. It opened on July 24, 1983, coinciding with the bicentennial of Simón Bolivar's birth, and is located in Ziortza-Bolibar, formerly La Puebla de Bolibar (Markina-Xemein), the place of Bolívar's ancestors, in the farmhouse called Errementarikua, next to the Camino de Santiago path. If you decide to book, we’ll be thrilled to have you with us so you can enjoy the authenticity of the Basque Country. Registration Details Basque Country - Regional registration number XBI00026
