Description

Cozy up in Penny the converted school bus! She's a unique glamping machine located in the heart of the Olympic Peninsula. From April-November, camp in downtown Quilcene, and in off-season at Dosewalllips State Park in Brinnon, both excellent bases for exploring the region's recreation and beauty. Stay steps away from Hood Canal, Olympic National Park and the historic seaport of Port Townsend. Make memories year round in this sweet and funky accommodation. We cover camping fees (a $30 value)! The space The bus: Penny is a 25 foot long school bus that began her life shuttling kiddos around in Tacoma. She is now proud to be partially (though imperfectly!) converted, and she's happy to continue her days hosting travelers in this exceptional nook of nature. She's utilized part-time for mobile poetry writing sessions for creative community outreach, and your stay directly supports that project. ***WINTER NOTICE***Penny is not insulated. With cooler temperatures, the summer bedding will be stripped to the bottom sheet and a spare blanket. Bringing your own cold weather sleeping bag extra blankets is necessary. When camping at Dosewallips, a $10 cash fee to register your vehicle (one allowed) will be guests' responsibility. There is no car fee when camping in Quilcene. In winter, the bus will be located in a site with electric hookups, with a small space heater provided. Contact the host for specifics if you'd like to stay in cold weather and have questions. She features: -A memory foam queen sized bed for two. This bed is a new donation to Penny, and she's grateful for it. The bed is so much better than sleeping on the ground, but it is very soft! If you prefer firm beds and don't enjoy feeling as though a cloud is encompassing you, this is not the right fit for your sleep needs. -Original bus seats for hanging out–like back when you were in middle school; a movable table and footrest. -A sink area and 7 gallon supply of water (fresh, delicious drinking water available at the campground) -A medium sized cooler (ice not included) -A portable camp stove (bring paper plates/cutlery/cook pans and such; olive oil, basic seasonings, stove fuel provided) for outside cooking only -Tea and mushroom coffee! Kettle and a french press provided if you'd like to bring along your own (real) coffee -Seasonal fruit for snacking -Books, games and a sketch pad -Two camping chairs -Privacy curtains -Battery operated and LED lights -Ear plugs (as the campground is near highway 101) -In the cool weather (beginning October), a space heater. Please read winter camping notice above. Restroom and shower facilities (a coin shower is only at Dosewallips) are on-site. There is no bathroom in the bus. The campgrounds: The Quilcene campground is a small, wooded facility, and Dosewallips State Park is a larger facility along the river, with hiking trails and showers. The cost of camping is included with your reservation. Your hosts will set up the bus at an available site, aiming to park in one further away from the road, if possible. Sites have fire rings (check burn ban rules online) and picnic tables. In Quilcene, the community center is adjacent with tennis and basketball courts and has a wifi connection. No wifi is available at Dosewallips. Both parks are across the street from a local restaurant. As with any public space, we cannot guarantee the kind of neighbors you will have. We've had great experiences camping in both locations, but there is a chance folks may car camp in the facility overnight, or a loud neighbor could taint the stay. **Please realize these factors are out of the hosts' control and skip booking if you're looking for a secluded camping experience that's not exposed to the unpredictable nature of public facilities.** That being said, the pros of the locations cannot be beat. The location: The Quilcene marina is down the road, along with shellfish harvesting. Fish your heart out in the canal (season dependent) or year road at Leland Lake. And oh, the hiking! Local trails include The Big Quilcene, Notch Pass, Marmot Pass, Mount Townsend, Tunnel Creek, Mt Zion, Mt Walker, Falls View Campground (waterfall), Dosewallips River Road, Ranger Hole, Murhut Falls, Duckabush River, Rocky Brook Falls and more! Quilcene and Brinnon are wonderful destinations, as well as awesome stop-overs on a longer trip. The Peninsula has so many gems, such as Hurricane Ridge and the wild Washington coast. We're always happy to give you travel recommendations! Guest access Penny will be registered, parked and ready for you to camp. The front doors open gently by pulling and lock from the inside. You will receive detailed check-in instructions prior to arrival. Other things to note Guests are expected to abide by the campgrounds' posted rules. Because Penny cannot be locked from the outside, much like a tent, all valuables and personal items should be taken with you or left in your locked car when not present. The bus is lockable when inside. Penny is a pet free space due to asthma of the host. Please remove shoes before entering the bus. Check in time is 3pm; check out time is 1pm.
