On Øya there are only 10 large houses that were built in the time when the industry and the smelter had its heyday from 1913 to the closure of the smelter in 1975. Sam Eyde, who has been responsible for industrial development in several places in Norway, also had his residence and workplace here. This island is full of history. The museum at Eydehavn has recreated this time when workers and officials each lived their own social lives. The officials lived on Buøya, with a barrier separating them from the mainland. At the end of the 1960s, the barrier from the bridge was removed and opened to the public. We are happy about this. Today, Buøya is one of the finest outdoor areas with beaches and parks, as well as hiking trails. Buøya is located about 13 km east of Arendal city center which has most of the city's facilities.
