Set on the original 1890s Hillcrest Farms estate, you'll be surrounded by 2,212 acres of Hillcrest Wildlife Management Area with public access for hiking, wildlife watching, and hunting. Watch turkeys, deer, pheasants, and more from your front porch. A bubbling creek, fire pit in a stone circle, BBQ grill, hammock, and two porches complete your outdoor escape. No quiet hours here — unless the deer complain. Indoor and outdoor Bluetooth speakers let you listen to music while soaking in the hot tub. Smart TVs include Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, and more. Karaoke amp and mic available on request. Ring the Bull game in the covered outdoor area. Horseshoes and croquet on the grounds. The History: This cottage sits behind Hillcrest Manor (circa 1890), home of C.A. Smith — the man credited with founding Chester WV, who owned 4,000 acres including what is now the entire Wildlife Management Area. His Hillcrest Farms raised prize Hereford bulls winning international championships in the 1940s. The famous Hillcrest Apple Orchards operated on this land until the 1970s. In the woods behind the cottage, remnants of an even older structure from the 1600s remain. This historic land is your backyard — explore it anytime during your stay. Guest access Parking is in the lot outside of the house. Stay in designated area as in guide book and if on WMA follow rules and ruglations. Other things to note Do note that our home is a older cottage and contains a lot of its original charm with some uneven original floors and every so often a new cosmetic crack appears from the home settling. Being surrounded by wilderness means enjoying nature - and you may come across some on your stay. Although nothing should be of danger to you we would not recommend going up in the wild life management area (WMA) at night without protection and if you have a pet keep them on a leash. We have Ornamental Swan geese that you may see in the gated pond area near the cottage. They are generally safe but please enter the pond or approach them (especially children ) as they may get aggressive. At certain times of the year the grass may be a bit high on the main WMA trail so wear appropriate clothing if you plan on hiking and spray with deet or similar. During hunting season you may hear the occasional gun fire and wearing orange in the WMA is recommended at these times. We are in the countryside of Chester WV which borders both Pennsylvania and Ohio. Even though it is completed secluded it is still near many stores , bars and restaurants .
