Description

The Valley House - A cosy home nestled in Ireland's highest mountain range The space The Valley House is nestled amidst the McGillycuddy Reeks, Ireland's highest mountain range. Here you will find Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest mountain. At the foot of these mountains is the Killarney National Park with its world famous lakes of Killarney. We are right on the Kerry Way walking trail, one of Ireland’s longest, signposted walking trails and it is also the most popular of all walking trails.  The Valley House is situated just after the Gap of Dunloe close to the Ring of Kerry. Here you can enjoy boat/horse-riding trips and go for picturesque walks. The house dates back as far as 1900 and has been renovated throughout the years but still retains much of the charm and character of its original features.  We have a large open plan living room and kitchen with a wood burning stove and all the space you need to just relax. There are four bedrooms. The Valley Room - A large room with a king sized bed overlooking the Valley. The Yellow Room - A small hobbit like space with a comfy double bed, a desk and views over the garden and beyond.  The River Room - A twin room along the river side of the house. The Old Stone Room - An old stone walled room with a double bed. We have a picnic table in the garden where you can sit out and enjoy a meal and a patio where you can throw down a blanket and lay back. Perfect for a family holiday, a romantic getaway, a trip with friends or to get away and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet all to yourself. * No house parties. We are a scenic 40 minute drive both from Killarney and from Kenmare. Killarney is a vibrant town with plenty of good restaurants and pubs. Kenmare is a quaint town with rolling mountains as the backdrop and colourful streets lined with charming restaurants and shops. The Valley House is a real nature lovers getaway. Although we are located close to many tourist attractions, The Valley House is in a remote, beautiful area, surrounded by mountains, rivers, lakes and forests. You can be sure to find  peace and quiet in these natural surroundings. Sometimes all we need is a few days of pure tranquility and fresh air! There are many walking routes close to the house. - The Lake Walk, simply step outside the door and follow the road to the lakes. - Purple Mountain, located to the west of the lovely Killarney Lakes, is the highest peak in the Killarney National Park. We are a 10 minute drive from the starting point in the Gap of Dunloe. - Strikeen mountain is one of the more accessible mountains of the McGillycuddy Reeks. Rising just over 300m from the glacial valley floor of the Gap of Dunloe, it is an ideal introduction to the Reeks for the young or uninitiated.  - The Old Kenmare Road is a scenic trail that meanders through the uplands of Killarney National Park and forms part of the Kerry Way long distance trail. A 10 minute drive from the house will bring you to Lord Brandon's Cottage (where refreshments are available during the summer months). Here you can start your walk up through the Old Kenmare Road and onto Derrycunnihy Church. - The Bridia Valley is a stunning and peaceful valley on the famous Kerry Way walking trail which enters the valley via the ancient Lake Road and Bridia Pass used for over 5000 years. You can start this walk from our doorstep. - Tomies wood is one of the last natural oak forests in Ireland. Explore this 6.6km loop trail which is generally considered an easy route. This is a very popular area for birding, hiking, and running, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring.  - And many more short strolls nearby the house. There are many other attractions within driving distance from the house. Some include:  - Ross Castle - Muckross House and Abbey - Torc Waterfall - Ladies View A little further with the car will take you on some beautiful driving routes. The Wild Atlantic Way, the Beara Peninsula, the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula are some of our favourites. Close to the house are Ross Golf Course, Killarney Golf course and Beaufort Golf course. Guest access The journey to get you here will take you through some of the most breathtaking scenery. The roads to the house are narrow, starting at Beaufort, winding up and up through the famous Gap of Dunloe and then down into the Black Valley or via the equally beautiful Ladies View/Molls Gap road.  We advise that you buy any shopping at one of the nearest towns before arrival to avoid unnecessary travel and to make the most of your stay. The nearest bar and restaurant, Kate Kearney's Cottage is 9 km away and offers traditional food and live entertainment during the summer months. We are about a one hour drive from Kerry airport, a two hour drive from Cork airport and a four hour drive from Dublin airport. There is a train and bus station in Killarney which connects to most parts of Ireland. Other things to note Due to the location of the house there can be limited phone coverage. We have a very friendly and gentle cat named Boef, living close by, who might pop down to say hello.
