Please note that the cottage is not suitable for toddlers/small children, and all children must be declared during the booking process. High quality Rointe electric heaters, bed linen, towels, Wi-Fi and logs for wood burner included. Private front entrance and private garden with sitting-out area and garden furniture. Surrounded by farmland, the cottage is close to the main house at Low New Houses which is the ancestral home of the Kipling Family. Kipling Cottage dates back possibly to the 17th century and has been beautifully restored with stone floors, lime plaster and a solid oak staircase. This tiny home is compact yet equipped to a high standard to ensure you are well catered for during your stay. The ground floor opens into a living area with oak beams, flagged floor and a beautiful hand-crafted kitchen with baby Belfast sink, two ring induction hob, combination microwave oven, fridge and breakfast bar for two. Two leather armchairs settle around the mini log-burner fireplace, making this a welcome space after a day of exploring. There is a 24" TV and 4G coverage. Steep paddle stairs climb up into the bedroom where solid oak bunk beds with European single mattresses (90 x 200cm) will ensure a good night’s sleep. There is a separate shower room with WC and small cubicle shower. The upstairs basin completes the scene. DAB bluetooth radio and USB charging points are provided. The property has a natural water supply from a spring. Outside the lawned gardens are a beautiful area to relax in – take your morning coffee in a sunny spot and listen to nothing more than the sounds of the countryside, the birds in the trees and the sheep in the fields. The perfect location for the outdoor enthusiast. Walkers and cyclists will enjoy the many established public footpaths that pass directly through the dale, including the Pennine Way, linking the small villages of Romaldkirk, Mickleton, Middleton-inTeesdale and Egglestone and providing many scenic walks. A popular route winds along the banks of Hury Reservoir and can be extended further to link with Blackton reservoir, before taking you past the former home of once-famous Hannah Hauxwell. The land she farmed is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the diverse flora and fauna it boasts. For avid birdwatchers, this habitat supports a variety of native birds. For those who enjoy fishing, there is fly fishing for trout on Hury Reservoir, or water sports including sailing and windsurfing on nearby Grassholme Reservoir. The pretty villages between Kipling Cottage and the historic market town of Barnard Castle are also well worth a visit. In Barnard Castle you will find an array of shops including, butchers, bakers, fish and chip shops, pubs, cafés, restaurants arts and antique shops. The Bowes Museum, High Force Waterfall, Raby Castle and Eggleston Abbey can also be reached within a 30-minute drive. Guest access Guests are invited to use the entire cottage with its own front door. The private orchard is theirs to enjoy. There are free range chickens in the garden and we have a cockerel too, but he’s not allowed out until 8am! Other things to note Please note that the stairs to the bedroom are steep, without doors at the top or bottom.
