Schomburgk Cottage- Gawler- private, cozy, unique.

This romantic place to stay offers a history all its own. Come and experience what is believed to be the barn which has been converted into a cozy and private space for two. We have tried to retain as many historic features of the cottage while making sure it is modern and comfortable. We still have a lot to do and will continuing works between guests. The cottage has a quirky attic bedroom accessed by a steep set of stairs. Very much like a tiny house. Please keep that in mind when booking. The space The cottage is located on a rural property on the outskirts of Gawler in Kaurna country. This property was previously owned by Dr Richard Schomburgk who arrived in South Australia from Germany in 1849. The two brothers bought a property of 81 acres adjoining the Para River in the Gawler area in 1849. The settlement, which they named Buchsfelde and which our property was a part of. This land along with Richard's training in horticulture, was part of their successful farm. In 1865 the board of the Adelaide Botanical Gardens advertised for a new Director and chose Dr Richard Moritz Schomburgk of Buchsfelde Dr Schomburgk remained Director until 1891. Guests can enjoy a private space and wander amongst the fruit trees or sit and enjoy a drink in the glasshouse. The greater outdoor areas are shared space, however we endeavour to ensure your privacy in the cottage garden. The wood fire is wonderful for cold evenings. The outdoor spa is available for use on request and is a perfect spot for star gazing. The bedroom is located in the attic and is accessed by a steep staircase, very similar to a tiny house. Please consider your suitability to access this space before booking. There is limited headroom as per the attic configuration but the space is cozy, warm and unique. Renovations will continue for sometime as we landscape the gardens and create more outdoor living areas. No shoes to be worn inside. Please bring your slippers. Shared access to the orchard and wider property Other things to note Access to attic bedroom is via a steep staircase which may not be suitable for everyone! Pets are welcome, but be aware that we have our animals here and any visiting dogs must be friendly with other dogs. Suitable for smaller inside dogs. Please send a message to discuss suitability prior to booking. A basket of firewood is provided for your stay. Further firewood will need to be purchased and most service stations have small bags of firewood available for purchase.
