The space A place of conversion and artistic experimentation, Maumau is located in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. The house, where it is located, was built in 1938 and, today, is one of the few located in the neighborhood of Espinheiro that preserves its original characteristics. Lovingly resisting intense real estate speculation and the growing verticality undertaken in its surroundings, Maumau is an oasis embedded in one of the main traffic bottlenecks in the city. Between fruit trees and a small garden, there is a gallery, studio, space for artistic residency and a large room for classes, rehearsals and other experiences. Your backyard works, from Monday to Friday, also as co-working. The space houses various events and is also available for rentals. By establishing a dialogue between the various languages of contemporary art and political activism, the actions experienced at Maumau stimulate the creation and articulation of networks of collaboration between agents that make up the independent circuit of arts. The house is now occupied by the Graphic Lenta (collective engraving studio), the Tangolomango idealized for Gabi Cabral ( Theatre for childhood and youth) and Palmadamãoarte (art in high temperature ceramics by Andréa Freire) and the atelier of Joana Liberal. Irma Brown is responsible for the management of the space, sharing actions and projects with artists, producers, designers, etc. All this makes Maumau shelter and motor in creating multiple forms of micropolitics. Guest access O/ A/ E Guest has access to a collective kitchen (with stove and fridge) and also access to the backyard, which is shared with other actions of the house. At all, I remain reachable via Whatsapp at all times! Other things to note This is an old house located in the central neighborhood of the house. Here you have access to restaurants, pharmacies, bank, popular markets, etc. It is possible to rent bicycles and do a lot of walking. But Recife, as a whole, is a violent city. So we always keep the gate with a padlock. You will have a key from your room and one from the gate. The dogs also make security in the house.
