The room namesake: Homer-born Amelia Jenks Bloomer (1818-1894) was a pioneer in the temperance and women's rights movements and in the abolition of slavery. To advance these causes she founded the Lily (1849-1855), believed to be the first newspaper in the United States owned, edited, and published by a woman. Although she did not originate dress reform, she popularized it by wearing trousers.
