This little house started life as a woodworking shop. When we outgrew it, we made it into a guest house. It may be imperfect, but it's perfectly adorable. We have a peek of Mt. Hood from the yard and lovely territorial views. At night, you can enjoy the beauty of a Milky Way sky far from city light pollution. Come. Enjoy. Relax. NOTE: I sometimes make exceptions to "No Pets" with conditions. Please ask before booking. No smoking in the house. More important details the "The space" section. LOCATION Situated on five acres near the main house, in a quiet rural neighborhood, this bright, cheery space is about 10 minutes, (5.5 miles) from White Salmon's charming pubs, restaurants, shops, and grocery. Hood River is about 20 minutes (10 miles) away - just a short hop across the Hood River toll bridge ($3.50)*. It's a restful country retreat or a practical home-base for your Gorge adventures or business travel. It's a quiet spot great for relaxing and as a home-base for Gorge adventures, but if you want to be in the thick of things, it's probably not the best choice. *You can buy a BreezeBy pass from the Port of Hood River which reduces the cost by half. Search "Port of Hood River breeze by accounts" for more information. PARKING Parking is at the end of the driveway and is marked. We keep 2 spaces available for guests and can make more available if needed. We have had guests with fishing boats, motorcycle trailers, and RVs. LAYOUT The house consists of two large rooms with a connecting open doorway. One side includes the living and dining areas, and kitchen with refrigerator, microwave, and electric oven and stove. The second side contains the sleeping area, bathroom with a shower, and closet/laundry. The sleeping area has a queen bed, small dresser, bedside stand, and curtain which allows for bedroom privacy while maintaining bathroom access for all. There is no door on the bedroom which may not be ideal for those with infants, small children, or snoring issues. The floors are laminate, ceramic, and vinyl composite tile. BEDS Although the space is ideal for two people sharing the queen-size bed, a queen-sized Murphy bed is installed in the dining area of the large room, and two single cots or cot mattresses are available upon request. If you want to use the Murphy bed, we will adjust the position of the dining table and chairs so everything will fit. We also have a Pack 'n Play play yard with a full-size removable bassinet. The bassinet weight limit is 15 pounds; the play yard has a weight limit of 30 pounds. Please let us know what you need BEFORE arriving so we can set it up for you.. (Please also see the layout notes.) WORKSPACE An office chair, a desk with a lamp, and a color laser printer are in the large room. The printer is set up on the wireless network but a 10-foot USB printer cable is included in case of connection difficulties. NATURE You may hear coyotes at night or doves cooing in the trees. Nature is all around us. If the sight of a daddy-long-legs fills you with fright, best not to stay here. PLEASE ASK US! If you want something specific, please ask. We'll do our best to accommodate. We want you to have a stress-free stay. If you arrive and realize that you forgot to make a request, whether for bed set-up, an additional guest, or any other detail, don't hesitate to let us know. Give us an opportunity to be helpful. We like doing that! Guest access is to the private, fenced yard next to the little house and the common areas excluding outbuildings and areas with fences around them. There are a picnic table and chairs in the yard for your use. Our nearest neighbor has horses and a cow. Sometimes they graze on our land. They're tame, but please don't bother them. Our house is next to the Little House on the same property. We live here year-round. You may see us outside doing chores, accessing our shop, or walking around. Feel free to say hi if you like. My husband, Wayne and I live next door and are generally available if you need something, but unless you ask, we'll leave you in peace. HERE This is a rural property with a gravel driveway. No manicured lawns here. We are in an area of 5 to 20-acre forested and grassland lots. It's usually very quiet, but once in a while, you can hear children playing or the occasional radio when someone is entertaining themselves outside. THERE A lot of folks bike our county roads, though many of the local roads don't have much of a shoulder. There are several area trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. WE CARE We hope you choose to stay here because you enjoy being out in the countryside away from the hustle and bustle of town. We want you to enjoy the location as much as we do. If you're unsure about distance or driving time to a specific place or event, ask us. We'll gladly provide information. USING YOUR VEHICLE We're 4.2 miles from White Salmon. A car is the best way to get around. There is no regular public transport in this rural neighborhood, but it's an easy 4.2 mile, 10 minute trip to White Salmon where you can access Highway 14 that runs along the Washington shore, or cross the toll bridge to Hood River, OR, and I-84. (Toll is $3.50 each way, you can buy a BreezeBy pass from the Port of Hood River which reduces the cost by half. Search "Port of Hood River breeze by accounts" for more information.) TAXIS, TRAIN, BUS, and RIDE SERVICES There are a few local taxis in White Salmon, WA and Hood River, OR. Uber and Lyft are usually available. AmTrak has an unstaffed station in Bingen, WA (about 7 miles away). There's a Greyhound Bus station on the other side of the Columbia River in Hood River, OR (about 10 miles away). MAJOR AIRPORT The nearest international airport is PDX in Portland, OR (about 76 miles away). REGIONAL AIRPORTS There are 3 regional airports within 30 miles of the Little House. All are open to the public. None have control towers: • The Ken Jernstedt Airfield owned by the Port of Hood River is about 15 miles south across the Columbia River in Oregon • The Columbia Gorge Regional Airport at Dallesport, WA, owned by the Port of The Dalles (OR), is about 20 miles east. • Cascade Locks State Airport is about 27 miles southwest on the Oregon side of the Columbia River. • Winter access can be difficult. 4WD is advised. We can't always keep the driveway clear. Worst case is having to park near the road and walk about a thousand feet to the house. • Nature is all around us, so there may be turkeys, bunnies, deer, spiders, lizards, garden snakes etc.. • Bears, coyotes, and cougars inhabit the nearby woodlands. In the 20+ years we've lived here, we've never seen them on our property. • We are on well water and septic. Water pressure is adequate, but not like in the city. Please, no feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, diapers, or contraceptive items down the toilet. • Internet DSL is usually OK for streaming, but can sometimes lag. The Starlink connection has been fast and stable for us. We use it to telecommute without issue.
